speeches that inspire

Postby The UK in Exile » Sun Apr 29, 2012 8:42 pm

Nation states! lend me your ears!.

what speeches inspire you? are you a Martin Luther King man? does shakespeare get you blood flowing?

for me, although its not my favourite EVER, I like cromwell, dissolving parliament.

cromwell wrote:it is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter'd your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil'd this sacred place, and turn'd the Lord's temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress'd, are yourselves gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!

given what we know about cromwell, (for all his many fault's a godly man.) its the earnestness of "in the name of god, go!" which sells me.

however, NS, this is not a thread about cromwell, it is a thread about YOU! (in soviet russia)

which speech's inspire you?

The one that came to mind was This Is Water by David Foster Wallace. But there are many others.

"There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says "Morning, boys. How's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes "What the hell is water?"

A simplified maxim on the subject states "An atheist would say, 'I don't believe God exists'; an agnostic would say, 'I don't know whether or not God exists'; and an ignostic would say, 'I don't know what you mean when you say, "God exists" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignosticism

Listen to FDR's "Great Arsenal of Democracy"

http://wamc.org/post/president-roosevel ... id-woolner

I just heard F Murray Abraham recreate Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address on this same station, WAMC.

The show is The Power of Words.

The speech starts around minute 13.

I would assume linking Chaplain's speech from "The Dictator" would be too obvious?

Kennedy's 1961 inaugural address is quite good:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLmiOEk59n8

And, of course, the 'moon speech':

Less credited with charismatic skill, Stalin!

Is it just me, or is Stalin's voice somewhat...Nerdy?

I Have A Dream is fucking epic. I also love JFK's Rice UC Moon speech and Charlie Chaplin's one at the end of the Great Dictator.
"Quod Vult, Valde Valt"

Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.

Yeah, Rev. King's speeches for sure. And the one in my sig, by Mario Savio. Short but sweet.

FDR made a few speeches I liked, but I'll sum it up with my favorite part:
FDR wrote:In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.

The first is freedom of speech and expression--everywhere in the world.

The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way--everywhere in the world.

The third is freedom from want--which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants-everywhere in the world.

The fourth is freedom from fear--which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor--anywhere in the world.

And a snippet from Lincoln's 2nd Inauguration.
Lincoln wrote:On the occasion corresponding to this four years ago all thoughts were anxiously directed to an impending civil war. All dreaded it, all sought to avert it. While the inaugural address was being delivered from this place, devoted altogether to saving the Union without war, insurgent agents were in the city seeking to destroy it without war--seeking to dissolve the Union and divide effects by negotiation. Both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish, and the war came.

Lastly, two poems that read like speeches:
Walt Whitman - O Captain! My Captain!

Dylan Thomas - Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech. Sends shivers up my spine when I read it aloud, with all the shouting and everything.

Here's a good version of it.

recognise this one.

It was paraphrased in battlestar galactica. :lol2:

Pretty much anything by David Lange is good, but it's hard to find his speeches.

EDIT: Dammit I just realised that that video's been chopped to pieces >:(

"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

As unsympathetic as I am, I can't really get into that speech in the OP with the knowledge its basically some murderous Puritan justifying his own dictatorship. Sounds like Taliban material.
