I think that the Filipinos and the Vietnamese would like to contain China in their dreams, but then wake up and realize that their actions are than suicide.

The South China islands belongs to however has troops stationed on those islands and or reefs.

Do consider the Philippines to have the best claim. The Philippines calls the South China Sea near there territorial waters, the West Philippine Sea.

And that Malaysian claim of the Spratly islands is really a Philippines claim since Malaysia claims those islands because of Malaysian control of Sabah. Sabah is rightfully claimed by the Philippines since the Sulu islands are controlled by them. The Sultan of Sulu gets paid rent by Malyasia for a good part of Sabah which they originally leased to the UK.

Why not have an international body govern the South China Sea? Antarctica has a similar arrangement, and I am sure it'd be useful elsewhere. Like in the Arctic ocean.

Hypocrisy describes you but not me. Yes, Hypocrisy describe you. And Rude Person, you conveniently left out my comment on the Philippines having the best claim. And Rude person you have not idea what you are talking about comparing the Malvinas, which Argentina sent settlers to and has been claiming since the 19 century, to some sand bars in the South China Sea which historically has tended to mainly be a hideout for pirates. Hardly anyone cared about those islands, reefs and sand bars until the possibility of finding plenty of oil was announced.

Look what they say about the Spratly islands.

Population: no indigenous inhabitants
note: there are scattered garrisons occupied by military personnel of several claimant states

Currently, some of those sand bars are controlled by those who have military forces on them. And anyone who tries to pry any of the nations from any of those sand bar on which they have stationed military forces could just be starting a major war. So unfortunately what I said goes, "the South China islands belongs to however has troops stationed on those islands and or reefs". So if China has military stationed on 5 islands, the Philippines 7 islands, Taiwan 1 island chances are they will maintain control of those islands since to dislodge any of them would create a war. Islands which are claimed but have no military forces is something else.

Time for some people here to be educated.

This is a map of Chinas Spratly claim. It is an ancient claim.

Image

China has powerful radio and tv transmitors, so the nation that makes trouble against that claim will be hearing and possibly seeing this friendly warning on there radio and tv stations.

UNCLOS recognizes old continuous claims.
The problem is China had this habit of scuttling their navy and going isolationist, giving other claimants as much or more of a claim.

Also both countries took reservations when signing the treaty.

Like I said before, the Philippines has the best claim. But they needed to put people on those small islands, reefs and sand bars.

The Chinese did just that. One day the Philippines surprisingly discovered that the Chinese had built a small type of base on Mischief Reef. Chinese were smart in constructing that base since it was located at the eastern end of there claim close to the Philippines.

Light Blue is Chinas Spratly claim.

To the Southwest of the Spratlies far from the Philippines, Vietnam built the following structure.

Taiwan, just like the PRC, claims all the Spratly islands.
They currently control the largest of the islands, Taiping Island. It is the only island in the Spratlys with freshwater.

Photo of the Philippines Nanshan Cay. The Philippines military supposedly has some troops stationed there. Most of the Spratly islands are like this. A sand bar in the middle of the ocean.

About 45 islands are occupied by relatively small numbers of military forces from Vietnam, the People's Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), Malaysia and the Philippines

The reason why all parties concerned are using peace talks to deal with this is because Vietnam and the Philippines couldn't suffer another defeat in the South China Sea.

After WW II, US policy was to rebuild Japan into a modern Industrial power. There plan for the Philippines, which was a US Commonwealth, was for the Philippines to be a supplier to Japan. If the Phiippines had been turned into a modern industrial power like Japan then there might not be a Spratly conflcit. Today, the Philippines is considered to have the weakest military in the region.
