Polygraph

Postby Greed and Death » Wed Sep 23, 2009 7:11 pm

Hey how easy is it to beat a polygraph?
Just curious as Due to need of money I find myself steered to law enforcement, and I may need to gloss over a few things in my past.

I don't think they'll polygraph you. They'll just look up everything you've ever said or done since you were conceived.

Yes. What I am saying is that law enforcement has a pretty decent idea that it isn't accurate enough to use to determine guilt or innocense. Also, I have never heard of anyone using a polygraph test as a hiring criteria, let alone a police department.

Ok i don't know what country your from, they don't use polygraphs i have never heard of a country using on for hiring practice, they just ask you a bunch of questions and you fill in forms etc which you have to be as honest as possible otherwise you can be prosecuted for not reveling information

The secret service and FBI both use it.

IIRC, polygraph results aren't even admissible in court.

Marcus Klingberg, a soviet spy in Israel managed to outwit the polygraph multiple times. All the machine does is measure your physical responses to yes or no questions (heartbeat, sweating, etc.) I've got no clue how sensitive it is but I imagine you could keep your heart rate in check/keep your cool through sheer will alone.

You could also feign stupidity and start giving answers besides yes or no, which I believe would kind of invalidate the test.

... so you're claiming your circumstances justify lying? Not trying to be judgemental, just suggesting you ask yourself if it's worth it.

Anyway, the polygraph lie detector works by measuring how various symptoms respond to control questions and relevant questions. Supposedly they hook you up to the machine to continuously measure symptoms as they start with questions they already know the answer to and that the subject won't be inclined to lie on, then they look at the patterns of symptoms, then they move onto the more relevant questions. If an answer to one of the relevant questions causes a significant divergence from the symptom pattern of the control questions, that will be regarded as indicating that you're lying.

Certain things from my past are a matter of my privacy and have no bearing on the present.

Yes that's how it is done. And it can work and not work during the same test on the same person. Evidence here.

So you're looking at the FBI and Secret Service (only one of which is law enforcement, by the way), and think they can't figure out your IP if they want to?

"Due to need of money...?"
If that's the reason you want to be in law enforcement, I STRONGLY suggest you look elsewhere. It's a job for dedicated individuals who are willing to do things "normal" people would never do and involves a high degree of moral and ethical conduct. Namely, integrity.

I'm not saying you need to be perfect, you just need to be able to stand up and tell the truth about it. Most departments have a policy to 'forgive and forget' past events over a certain time period (five years usually)

As for fooling a polygraph, you shouldn't need to. They ask you the questions for a reason. It's to see if you're lying or not, if you can tell the truth, if you have integrity. All the departments in my area use it, and I've done it. It's not difficult if you just tell the truth.

they would if they were watching it right now.

The secret service is law enforcement.
They handle currency counterfeiting.
