Death.

Postby Kobrania » Wed Sep 23, 2009 4:23 pm

I do not view death or the dying as most people do, I am a bit calous when talking about it.

When talking to people I usually use the line
"Trying to avoid the inevitable end is both vain and foolish and the most you could really hopefor is a quick and a possibly painless one."
Alot of people get mad at this as they try to exend a loveones life for just a few more months.
I unfortunatley follow up with "The few more moments that you grant them are going to be either: Painful, Drug addled or completly boring and it would be more generous to let them slip away."

I don't feel the need to consider how long I will live, the moment I am forced to depend on anothers aid to live, is the moment I pull my own plug, it releases the burden on the NHS and on the hearts of those foolish enough to think me happy liying in a bed stone-cold bored.

I do not personally believe in the after life, and I am not scared, for how can you fear oblivion...nothingness?

So where was I go...OH! What do you think about death and the afterlife?

Yeah, I pretty much agree. I'd rather that it be the end, really. What's the point of eternity?

Death is an ending to life. I hope, you know, I hope that when the time comes there's something on the other side. But mostly I know this is mere wishful thinking. There's likely nothing waiting for me when I cross. I guess all I can truly hope for is, well, oblivion.

Death is just a part of life (Though I admit I am rather amused by the replies so far and really wonder, should I hold a gun to your head, would everyone still remain so prozaic and claim they care not about death). As for what happens afterwards, I have my own beliefs, but it is the undiscovered country after all and none of us will find out until it is too late to come back and tell the rest.
To those who feel, life is a tragedy. To those who think, it's a comedy.

I sort of believe in reincarnation, to the extent I care at all. I really don't care, though. I think people fear death too much. What point is there in fearing or dreading something we will have to do eventually, one way or another? I'm hoping I'll die well -- in charge of myself, my life, comfortable, on a nice day, when I'm very old.

My favorite dying story was of a Javanese artist. He was believed to be 116 years old. He finished a commissioned painting, announced to his family that he would now die, and took to his bed. He hung around for a couple of weeks, mostly staying in bed, to give all his family and friends time to come to town and say good-bye. Then he died, and a huge funeral was held with music and barbeque. When some friends of the family remarked upon this, a grand-nephew shrugged and said "Someone who knew so well how to live, ought to know how to die."

That's how I'd like to go.

Oh see, I would freak, I would so totally freak. I don't WANT to die (especially before graduation), but I just find the thought of an afterlife unlikely and saddening.

I believe I would remain prozaic about the whole thing.

I fear pain, not death.

Edit: I assumed the gun to the head thing was a way of saying death you couldn't avoid, if it's an actual gun to the head then my reaction would likely be different.

I think there is a difference between caring about death as a general proposition and caring about some crazed net-loon holding a gun to one's head and threatening to pull the trigger.

death sucks

but there is no sense living at any cost no matter how miserable the final days.

after you die you are dead. that doesnt suck as much as having people you love die before their time.
whatever

Hey, just because I dont believe in an Afterlife, doesnt mean I dont like the Nowlife, :lol2: ...hopefully, Id remain calm enough to escape the situation alive, but I wont know until it comes, likely Id freak the fuck out, :)

And the Idea of ending up in a possible Hell means I dont particulary want an afterlife as it has been presented to me in most religions anyway...

This.

I believe in the Christian view of the afterlife, being one, after all.

I'm another one who believes that after death there is nothing and I find that thought pretty comforting. If I think about it in the context of a loved one however I find it very difficult to view it the same way. The thought of living on after they have ceased to exist and having no hope of being reunited is tough for me.

Death is not the end, just a new beggining and the shedding of one's physical self, unless you chose for it to be the end. It's inevitable and noone can prevent it. All we can do is hope that we lived life to it's fullest, we don't experience much pain, and that we don't look idiotic when we go.

Hey! Who are you calling a net-loon! I'm a card carrying crazy thank you very much. ;)

In any case though, it's not so much being afraid of death, but the idea of you're alive, then you're meat that I have an issue with and wonder just how much of that is an affected 'tude or just because someone hasn't really either thought about death or confronted death. Death does have meaning after all and all things strive to live.
