You're likely biased. Look at your nation's name.

To clarify, you mean NORTHERN Virginia, right? Most of the state's money comes from NoVa.
Which gets all its money by virtue of its proximity to DC.
E: We won't likely continue to operate say, the pentagon, especially if it were going to be staffed by foreign nationals.

Compared to the countries of Europe, except perhaps Russia and Ukraine, America is damn huge. We could probably carve up the US into ten or so smaller, functional countries.

I know how this will go.
The MegaCorporate Enclave of New York. In the case of a European writer, the Dutch might take it back.
A Mormon theocracy in the Holy State of Deseret, formerly known as Utah.
The People's Republic of California.
The Coalition of Las Vegas, an American Amsterdam.
The loud, proud, rather jingoist Republic of Texas. Alternately, a Hispanic-majority República de Tejas depending on whether the author is Hispanic.
The South has risen again to form the resurrected Confederate States.
The Southwest reclaimed by the Reformed Tribal Territories, and possibly at war with Mexico. Alternately, Mexico could fuse with it and call the new country Aztlan.
Oregon, Washington, northern California, and sometimes British Columbia form Cascadia, which is much more left-wing than the former US and built upon environmentalist principles.
The New England states are also off on their own, something that both New Englanders and non-New Englanders find very appealing. Sometimes, New England is combined with the Mid-Atlantic to form a Northeast country or it joins Canada.
Alaska is fused with the Canadian territories to form another Inuit province, or the Russians take it back.
Hawaii going back to native rule.
A powerless rump state in Washington DC (or elsewhere if DC was destroyed), still claiming descent from the Federal government and issuing grandiose proclamations which are ignored by the rest of the 'country'.
