Stormaen wrote:Unlike many other countries around the world, the UK does not have a 'national day', whereby its collective history and culture is celebrated. In recent years, successive governments have both said they want a national day for the UK (followed by doing nothing about it).

The Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly have both dedicated a 'national day' within their respective countries (St. Andrew's Day (30 November) in Scotland and St. David's Day (1 March) in Wales). Within England, however, St. George's day (today, 23 April) is not a 'national day', likewise St. Patrick's day (17 March) is not a national day in Northern Ireland. In both cases, however, there are informal celebrations on these days.

Within England, the previous government said that making St. George's day a national day in England would be "impractical" because 23 April often falls near Easter. This would mean that some public sector workers would have 4 days off out of 5 over Easter-week.

Eh? St David's Day isn't a bank holiday in Wales.

That's what I was thinking.

The Northern Irish do get St Patrick's Day, but the Welsh and the English don't get their respective Saint's days. Albeit St George is a crappy saint with little to nothing to do with England. Even though I'm not a Christian, St Alban would be a much better choice for a patron saint. He's at least from our neck of the woods.

Admittedly, he's not English.

It would be the 22nd of June.

A victory so amazing that after September 15th, 1940, there were no bomber strikes on any British city. Yes.

I may be an american (USian), but I believe they should have a national day in the UK. Choose one they all love.
The United Colonies of Earth exists:
to encourage settlement of all habitable worlds in the Galaxy and perhaps the Universe by the human race;
to ensure that human rights are respected, with force if necessary, and that all nations recognize the inevitable and unalienable rights of all human beings regardless of their individual and harmless differences, or Idiosyncrasies;
to represent the interests of all humankind to other sapient species;
to protect all humanity and its’ colonies from unneeded violence or danger;
to promote technological advancement and scientific achievement for the happiness, knowledge and welfare of all humans;
and to facilitate cooperation in the spheres of law, transportation, communication, and measurement between nation-states.

Why? Because other countries have them or something? Other countries also have bad drinking water. Not something to deliberately replicate.

I dunno, I'd just quite like another bank holiday.

British nationalism always seems a bit shit and contrived, where it isn't associated with thugs and racists.

Fucking street parties like it was the 1950s.

You are, of course, aware of the fact that May Day is quite an ancient holiday, right?

If you don't love the fact that Lond- the UK is getting the Olympics, then you're obviously a soulless traitor and a republican.

Whats all this nationalism about? No one wants a national day to celebrate heritage, apart from those irritating people that usually hate on the immigrants and stuff. What everyone really wants is a public holiday, the day and the meaning are insignificant.

How about a holiday for burning immigrants then?

So long as we get another bank holiday out of it, I'm OK with it.

So long as we're not racist about it.

You know, you could probably convince the queen to just skip this birthday and have it next year instead.

I'm not celebrating the Queen's Birthday unless I'm invited to her party.

I'd rather not go, to be honest. The fuck kind of present do you buy for a queen?
