The Worst Period to be alive in?

Postby Florexas » Tue Sep 22, 2009 8:48 am

I want to know which is the most terrible time period to live in. Now I know this poll may leave a lot be desired, but I have done my best to fit the categories into correct time periods.

Why do the Dark Ages end in 1066 on this poll? For Western Europe it was sometime in the 800s.

Yep.

Also I think that being a subject of empire X when empire X was collapsing (Roman empire, Inca empire, etc, etc) must have sucked like an American vacuum cleaner plugged into the European 220V.

1066 is usually a handy date for those who are somewhat Anglo-centric on when the Early Medieval Period draws to a close. It's usually said to be about there or the First Crusade.

I reckon most of them in the poll, especially if you were poor.

Generally for Western Europe it's the crowning of Charlemagne in Rome as the first Holy Roman Emperor (Christmas 800).

Hmmm, but 1066 is the start of a reign of terror for the English, harrying of the north and all that.

[x] that prehistoric time where some huge disaster nearly wiped out humanity (and likely left the ones who survived miserable)

Actually I would have put The Early Middle Ages as 800 to 1066 instead of it being part of the Dark Ages, but I was trying to get a broader sweep of history. Also I thought that 800-1066 was a continuation of the Dark Ages. Obviously I was wrong. :( :(

I would not have the renaissance extend that far forward.

The Thirty Years' war and its immediate aftermath get my vote.

Turmoil, death, disease, no stability anywhere, for two generations.

The only good thing that came out of it was that everyone got sick and tired of fighting over religion.

In my opinion, one of the worst periods to live in would have been during the times of heavy plague, the middle ages. During that time it took a bit of persuasion for the Christian churches to gradually accept the practical cures and treatments because early on, the church at the time believed in the forces of the god or the devil. The rediscovery of medical knowledge is one of the factors of the Renaissance age.

Indeed, but it's a neat cut-off point. The end of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom and the beginning of what would become modern England. It's the last successful invasion of England and the last major Viking invasion. A lot of things put the end of the Early Medieval Period around the 11th Century.

depends where and who you are in the world at a given time. the general answer is that it always sucks to be a poor farmer for the entire history of civilization, up to the present day in most parts of the world. and it also always sucks to live in permanent settlements before the invention of sewers. and it also also always sucks to live next to those damn expansionist farmers who are all disease-ridden and starving but also outnumber you by huge margins.

I think this sorta depends on who's point of view you're looking from. If you're a rich white guy, then it's all good, really.

On the other hand if you're a woman, you're more or less fucked no matter what time you're in.

Yeah, basically this. I mean living in ancient Rome or Greece would be awesome if you were a wealthy landowner or something, but suck immensely if you were a slave or a woman.

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.
