If you were an incumbent president, would you be comfortable only beating your opponent by 2-5 points in key swing states (even though he may not be your opponent come November) nearly 6 months before the election? I would be extremely nervous and hope that Romney either picks another Sarah Palin or the economy gets back on track.

Sure, why not? It's something to build on. There are six months of campaigning to go through, I wouldn't be worried. If I were Mitt Romney, I would be worrying that the economy is going to keep improving over the summer and fall. Then I'm really screwed. I'd also worry about how the hell I'm going to get back even near the center when the House leadership just announced that they're in charge. I'd be sweating bullets, in fact, because those are the guys who took Speaker Boehner out behind the Capitol and explained things to him last year.

I'd also be scared because my favorable rating were the lowest since 1984.

if i were mitt romney i would trust that god would tank the economy or provide another terrible problem at exactly the right time to win the election. romney is the white horse and its his turn to be in the white house.

Um, that ABC poll is a crock of shit.

It listed 34% Democrat voters, 23% Republicans, and 43% independent.

It is not even remotely representative of the US electorate, which is closer to 55-60% independent. It should surprise no-one that a poll with more Democrat voters favors the Democrat.

Do you understand how polling works?

Your sample doesn't have to match the population sample if you adjust the results for sub-sample variations.

For example, let's suppose you take a poll, and 63% of the poll respondents are men while 37% are women. In the poll, men favor option A by a 55-45 margin, while women favor B by a 60-40 margin.

In your raw polling results, because men outnumber women 63-37, B leads A in popularity by a 51-49 margin. That's not accurate, however, because your poll had more male respondents than female ones; to make the poll accurate, you need to adjust the polling size of each sub-sample to match the makeup of the general population. After doing this, your corrected poll now favors B by a 53-47 margin.

Actually poll results involve many, many more corrections; at the end of the day, however, they produce relatively accurate results.

And, if you think about it, why would a polling agency want to publish inaccurate results? Polling agencies like Gallup do more than produce election polls for news agencies; they generate consumer preference polls for private industry. It's a commercial product, for crying out loud: The more accurately your polling agency's results, the better contracts you get from businesses that are interested in consumer surveys on all sorts of things from customer satisfaction to new product acceptance.
