Sure, a basic dress code makes sense (i.e, an appropriate amount of clothing, nothing gang related), but that's as far as limitations on what students can where should go. Requiring uniforms kills a basic form of individual expression, and, from my experience, creates a practically militaristic and far gloomier, more oppressive school experience.

My experience wasn't militaristic or gloomy at all.

Why have them? They're literally a waste.
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

(Assuming you're telling the truth.)

You know the point of getting an A is so that you can utilize it in real life? You're wasting your time if you're getting an A in English and then come here and type like that.

Throughout my public schooling years, school uniform was compulsory. It was very lax for my primary school, as long as you wore the polo shirt. But in high school it was heavily regulated. We were even forced to wear black shoes, and if we didn't, they'd give us detention, which is illegal for them to do, but they somehow found a loophole. It was pretty stupid, though. I lived in a pretty ghetto area, and the punishments were severe (several detentions lead to expulsion), especially for those who couldn't afford it.

IMO, school uniform is a pretty neat idea. It's easy to identify the students. Though I don't think you should be punished if you are too poor to buy your own.

And it looks great in adult movies

In the US they have A grades for everything. In the UK they only start using A grades at GCSE level.

Also the US education system is inferior.

This is why I've always felt that ''rebellion'' against the school is completely pointless. Breaking the dress code to show you disagree with it won't cause them to change it. You'll just keep getting punished until you realize you're wasting your time, and then laugh about it later on in life.

100% true. My college essentially makes everyone retake everything from algebra on in maths. Not sure about other subjects because I've always been good in english so I pretty nearly placed out of it.

What extra time...? Unless you outlaw makeup, girls will spend the same amount of time getting dressed. Guys don't spend much time getting dressed anyway. Plus, here's the thing: it's a waste of money. Why pay for something that you won't wear out of school? Why should you be forced to buy clothes you don't want when you can buy clothes you DO want that you can wear outside of school as well as in school.

Yeah... I still don't see why they matter; it should be up to the school.

School uniforms are extremely beneficial, and I support them. It helps instill in students the ability later in life to wear proper clothing for work, subliminally suggests equality among students, and removes self-consciousness in students.

Nope, not at all. Uniform itself doesn't change the environment of schools... at all. If anything, it enhances the experience. No longer are people judged on what they wear, how they wear it, etc.

And what benefits would those be?

1) They reduce the ability for student gang members to display their affiliation, a problem in some schools.
2) They reduce the need for parents to provide their kids expensive, stylish clothing.
3) Some students benefit from fewer distractions, such as looking at the other kiddies' fancy clothing.
3a) Some students simply benefit from external discipline, but OTOH, some students rebel against it, so it's rather a mixed bag.

However, I don't think one needs uniforms per se to achieve these goals. A relatively broad dress code (no gang colors, shirts with buttons, no labels visible, no jeans, no althetic shoes except in gym class) achieves the same ends (except 3a, but it has its own limitations) while still allowing the kids to dress mostly as they choose.
