SciFi's latest blunder

Postby Anti-Social Darwinism » Sat Sep 19, 2009 2:19 pm

The SciFi channel (I can't bring myself to call it SyFy- that's just wrong) has, in the wake of the resounding lack of success of the Tin Man, decided to warp yet another children's classic and bring a re-imagined Alice to the boards.

Is this going to be another cosmic literary abortion, as I suspect? Or, do you think it might actually work?

Can anyone screw up Alice in Wonderland (any more than Lewis Carroll already has, anyway)?

According to Nielsen Media Research, the first night of the miniseries averaged more than 6.3 million viewers during its timeslot, making it the most-watched telecast in the network's history and the top rated cable miniseries of 2007. The second part average 4.4 million viewers, and the final part had 5.1 million.

This is considered 'lack of success?'

I saw the promo for it, and think I'll try to watch it. Hell, Andrew Lee Potts from Primeval plays the Mad Hatter, so that's a draw for me.

The promo of her staring deep into a poop hole in the ground doesn't make me want to watch it.

And these new modern remakes of older classics get worse and worse as time progresses, I doubt it'll be a (rare) case of the remake being significantly decent to my palate.

I almost wish they hadn't stopped making Battlestar Galactica, but if they hadn't ended it the way they had, it would have been frakking awful.

I am kinda glad they did end it when they did. If they kept going there was a distinct danger of a repeat of Galactica 1980. I am not sure I could handle that twice in one lifetime.

I am too, and I'm not saying they should have tried, but I just wish that there was some way they could have continued to make it work.

Well, all good things must come to an end. Otherwise they go bad and ruin it so far into the past that it was never good in the first place.

Seems like a reasonable idea, and it's hardly the first time someone's taken an oblique stab at the Alice mythos ("American McGee's Alice" was an awesome game). I can certainly see the pressure to ride the build-up, and pop this out before Tim Burton sucks all the air out of the room.

"Tin Man" was interesting, I'll wait and see what they do with Alice.

I'm halfway expecting an adaptation of the Nutcracker Ballet, next - since they seem to be seriously mining the 'girls underground' mythos.

In answer to your question:

From the linked article:

For this re-imagined adaptation, writer/director Nick Willing mines the bizarre ingenuity and twisted logic of Carroll's work to create a daringly different, boldly colorful and delightfully skewed dreamscape of his own. Willing also directed the record-breaking, Emmy-winning miniseries Tin Man for Syfy in 2007.

It's going to suck.

I saw, only once on PBS many years ago, an extremely excellent adaptation of the Nutcracker called "The Hard Nut". It's a ballet. It's modernized. It's extremely good. I would sell my neighbor's eyeteeth for a dvd of it.

Looks interesting, I wishlisted it.

No eyeteeth needed. It'll only set you back about $23 new, through Amazon. You could doubtless find a better price elsewhere.

I'm not sure I liked the ending all that much it was far too.... happy for my taste. I was still holding out for a little bit darker conclusion, to fit the whole theme of the show.

I third it. That was far too good of a show to throw away like they did. SciFi could probably pick up the license and the actors fairly easily, and it would save them the expense of creating a new series, and it already has a sizable fanbase, so from a business standpoint, its quite a sound idea.
