Are our children learning?

High School students in Oklahoma were asked were asked basic questions about government and failed miserably. Only 3% of them would have passed a US citizen ship test which asked these questions.

So I ask the question; Is our children learning?

I've seen the citizenship test. I doubt that *I* could pass it.

I have a question.

Can you ask "Is our children learning?", or only writing "Are our children learning?"

What is the proper grammar form?
I have doubts now.

"Is our children learning?" Well I'd have to say no, if they're incapable of forming a proper sentence.

President G.W. Bush said, in a speech, "The question we must as ourselves is: is our children learning?"

That's where this comes from. Grammatically, it should be "Are our children learning?", thus the funny.

No, the liberals are the ones who are teaching, its the conservatives who skew the education system by trying to get ridiculous things like prayer in school, creationism, ect.

Thusly, the hijack begins.

Oklahoma can't keep competent teachers because they grossly under pay them. Many of them go to Texas or elsewhere for better pay.

Thanks to you two for the detailed information. I have heard that phrase of "Is our children learning?", so much, that I was starting to think that it was gramatically right, (although it was all against all the lessons of english grammar I could remember)

And of course, you'll provide the lengthy statistical data necessary to prove all of this. Or you would, except you'll probably claim statistics is the devils work.

You're funny.

Here's a immigration test with the tougher questions:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13442226/

I would have to study for most of them (is not an American).
