He was probably pressed for space on this poll as so many wars have been costly.

Do the Mongol invasions count as a war? If not World War II.

What the hell is a yankie, and who did they gain independence from?

Or are you talking about the American Revolutionary War?

Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

I would say WW2 as most sources put it at around 50-78 million dead from both sides, military and civilian.
Everything you know about me is wrong. Or a rumor. Something like that.

World War II was the most costliest war, affecting more territory than WWI. On the lighter side, it lead much of the developed world to work together to avoid another one like that happening again.

As a percentage of total population of the competing factions, the US Civil War ranks right up there.

Otherwise, WW I's 37 million gets my vote.

Easily WW2. Killed many more than even WW1, initiated the final collapse of several empires (British, French), saw the invention and use of the A bomb and lead to the Cold war a few years later. :(

The Second World War, for the sheer amount of damage to infrastructure that occured throughout it.

Half of France was demolished, Britain got blitz'd, Germany was levelled, the USSR suffered 20 million casualties and severe damage to its Western industrial areas and cities, Japan received a one-two nuclear knockout, the US lost Pearl Harbour and a significant portion of their fleet and a majority of the French fleet was scuttled or sunk.

Do the WW II figures include the many millions (12m or more) killed domestically in Germany but not in battle?

Since those would have died with or without war, I do not consider them war casualties.

i wouldn't include the Chinese civil war, either.

Well the Mongol invasions are pretty high up there, but of the recent-er ones, it's either World War 2 or the 30 Years' War, depending on where you care about.

It lasted for 113 years and saw 20,000 villages turn into ghost town, couple that with lenghty period of troops that had the chance to die and you have a figure at least 3 times larger than the Second World War.

WW1 involved countries on every continent on the globe, casualties were in the hundreds of thousands for each battle, and almost every participant was economically ruined afterward. I'd say that's more costly.
