The most Athiestic/Agnostic country?

Postby Trippoli » Fri Sep 18, 2009 7:17 pm

I think it's either France, Estonia, or The Netherlands

34% of French citizens responded that “they believe there is a god”, whereas 27% answered that “they believe there is some sort of spirit or life force” and 33% that “they do not believe there is any sort of spirit, god, or life force”. One other study shows 32% of people in France declaring themselves to be atheists, and another 32% declaring themselves “sceptical about the existence of God but not an atheist”

All three countries have no official Religion.

I dunno, a lot of the European nations have pretty large atheist populations. Why is it that religion is usually weakest in secular nations when compared to atheist nations?

How do countries known for burning people alive for not being Christian end up being atheists about 150 years later? It may seem like a long time. But countries have been oppressed by certain religions for hundreds of year at a time.

Unless they just exterminate the entire population.

We exported all our religious dissidents? Strange that in Europe, politics and religion combine less, and less violently than in America. Possibly our culture and history being somewhat divorced from religion - there have been many changes in beliefs across Europe, so our cultures do not always lead back to current religions

What, from the repression in the old USSR?

Repression of a religion acts like fertilizer. If the apparatchiks wanted to really try and eradicate religion in the Soviet Union, they would have instituted laws guaranteeing Freedom of Religion, then went about on a massive propaganda campaign on the falsity of religion.

They sort of learned their "lessons" about radical religion in government, thus the government became more secular, and thus follows.

I didn't realize...but if you think about it, state atheism and the promotion of atheism by the state only makes sense if the population is religious, otherwise it's sorta redundant.

Besides as a general norm, any state with high levels of secularism would probably be too democratic to allow it anyways

No, secularism is easily the best choice. More freedom, and it actually promotes religious tolerance far better.

Well, maybe they really didn't want to try and eliminate religion 100%. After all, a good portion of them were Russian Christians.

Buddhists don't believe in God. So one of the predominantly Buddhist countries would be predominantly "non-theistic," which is different than athiestic. Non-theistic is like saying, "We don't have an opinion on whether or not God exists, but we don't have anything to do with God." I think Buddhists go an extra step and say that belief in God is problematic. Atheistic is saying "God doesn't exist" So maybe you could consider Buddhists as being more agnostic when it comes to God. So a country like Tibet, which is still a country whether or not China recognizes it, would be one of the most agnostic countries. In Communist countries, they forbid belief in God, but they can't prevent it..
