How about Fredrick Douglas? A great American, I think he would be an appropiate 1st African American on a bill.

Yeah, we could stick him in there too, we'd just have to be sure Obama's picture was on the same bill and much larger.

P.S. love the flag! you can't put an elephant killer on a US bill! :p

I still think that Jackson should have been shot for this.

He was successful until Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia. Modern West Virginia was a conquest of his (the one that got him the Army of the Potomac job), and he was at the gates of Richmond before Lee took over and drive him back.

Also, he's the man who built the Army of the Potomac.

Peddieville wrote:Brurnside-Defeated at Fredricksburg and The battle of the Crater, although a good subordinate to Grant

Fought Lee twice, got whipped twice. Successful elsewhere, before and between those defeats. Conquered east Tennessee, and repulsed a counteroffensive led by Longstreet. (Granted, Longstreet was not in a favorable situation.)

Peddieville wrote:Hooker-against all odd, lost at Chancellorsville

Although whipped the one time he fought Lee, he had been one of the best Union corps commanders before assuming command, and saw success out west afterward (The Battle Above The Clouds being the highlight, IIRC).

Peddieville wrote:Meade-won Gettysburg due to a mixture of strong performances by his subordinates, huge blunders by Lee-Picket's charge, and a little luck. Failed to follow up his victory and persue Lee's broken army.

I agree that Meade did little to win the Battle of Gettysburg (W.S. Hancock!) but he was a good corps commander before becoming commander of the Army of the Potomac. He also was far from a total failure in that position as well, and held it until the end of the war.

Peddieville wrote:Grant-managed to avoid doing any of the above.

Took Forts Donelson and Henry, providing the first Union victories of the war.
Recovered from the disaster of the first day of Shiloh to pull out a victory.
Found the way to take Vicksburg, and then had the balls to strike out from his supply line to do it. I doubt there were two other generals in the whole US Army who could have taken that city.
Commanded the decisive Union victory in the Tennessee theater, after establishing a secure supply line in a week that the previous commander had been unable to set up in a month.
And, finally, beat Robert E. Lee in Virginia through excellent use of maneuver and a refusal to play Lee's game.

It's worth noting that the casualty rate for men under Lee was higher than the rate for men under Grant. So much for the 'Zap Brannagan' theory.

Also, you forgot John Pope. Fought Lee once (Second Manassas), got utterly embarrassed, and was a successful indian fighter afterward.

Frankly, once you take their campaigns against Lee out of the equation, this is a set of distinguished and competent generals.

That seems to indicate, to me, that most likely they were competent all along but still out of their league anyway - which Grant was not. Where does that put him?

*Ahem*

Andrew Jackson invented the bear at age 12. During the War of 1812 he personally swam across the Atlantic ocean and punched King George in the face, made the British promise to stop putting people on the rack, freed all the prisoners in the Tower of London and swam back to the US because there weren't enough Indians to kill in the UK.
After that he single-handedly won the Battle of New Orleans by shouting at the British soldiers so hard they fainted. He then built the Washington Monument as a 1:1 scale replica of his own penis.
He also drove the British out of Washington DC, but he was so hotblooded that it set the place on fire.
He is also the reason the US didn't take over Canada. He found out that there were more Indians westwards and decided to go that way instead.

Sounds too Chuck-Norrisly...

Yes, all the other generals of the Civil war were very good at what they did, but none of them were good generals.

This was all mostly Sherman's doing, although he was under Grant. I've already said that Grant was good at delegating.
Most of Lee's casualties came from the earlier part of the war. Can I see a link for those stats, though?
Pope, honestly doesn't deserve to be mentioned if were talking about Union Generals.
Finally, Grant was able to win because of the work of his subordinates, including basically all the generals I mentioned, not instead of their work.

For reasons stated already by others, I would remove Jackson.

I would replace him with Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico.

i wouldn't have human faces on currency at all.
i'd put buildings on one side, sort of like now,
and nonhuman life forms in their natural settings
on what is now called the face.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

Henry Paulson should go on the new $1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bill.
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

No need. They'll be issuing the notes themselves. It will say Goldman Sachs note. Geithner will be on the new penny.

It could say on the back: "In God We Trust," and "Bernie Made-off with yo moolah!"
