I know. If you're not colourblind like me, you can tell that just from looking at it.

The tones are strong enough it isn't a problem. However, try playing Set in slightly bad light -- it just doesn't work.

My workaround is normally getting a friend to confirm colours for me. I'd find it really damn useful to be able to do so myself, especially when I'm doing tech work and stuff.

You know what's fucking irritating? I'm sure you've gotten this, someone finds out you're color blind and the first fucking thing they do is point to something and ask, "What color is that?" Are you fucking kidding me? Aren't you more qualified to answer that question, shouldn't I be asking you? I'm not your circus monkey. Do you do this to other handicaps? Do you ask blind people how many fingers you're holding up? Ask deaf people if they can hear you?

And while we're on the subject, I'm sure the notion just blew you're mind, but you're like the zillionth person who just farted out, "Like, wow, man...like, how do we know that what I call green is, like, really green, man...like, what if we're all colorblind, man." Because you're not. Because you all fucking agree that green is fucking green. Even if there wasn't spectrums that could be pointed to, you all agreed that no matter what you saw, it was green so it's fucking green. "But, like, man...how did you know it's not green..." Well, because it is green, it doesn't work that way. If the world was just seven basic colors without shading and mixing then it wouldn't be an issue, but it isn't. "But..." Stop, you're not going to 'logic away' my colorblindness. And pointing to some bright green shirt and saying it's red isn't clever either. I'm colorblind, not retarded.

Obviously the you isn't you Uni, it's the people colorblind people encounter.

Correct, correct, correct. And yes, those first two are damn evil, from what I've heard. The third is a very standard test though, and one I fail quite thoroughly.

Uno is bright red and bright green -- the shades and intensities are different enough there's no problem distinguishing them, unless you're a lot more colourblind than I am.

Preach it, brother.

Even worse "What colour is this?" "It's green" "You must be lying deliberately". Pisses me the hell off. What finally tends to make people believe was referring to the wrong colour in the middle of a conversation "Can you pass me that blue pen?" "Are you colourblind or something? It's purple" (well yes I fucking well am, asshole, as I told you three months ago).

Back in high school, I did this to a guy who was completely colorblind. He flipped me off. We were cool though.

Believe it or not, there is more than one genetic scientist in the world, so it's possible to work on more than one thing at once.

(I also have general opposition to the massively disproportionate amount of funding allocated for cancer research, while cancer really does have quite limited effects. If you want to do something really worthwhile, cure malaria.)

So would it be accurate to say that your colorblindness is dependent on the intensity of a given colour? Or is it more a question of contrast?

It's a combination. Basically, my eyes aren't particularly good at picking up on shades of red and distinguishing between red and green. With bright tones, the different intensities and the like are normally sufficient for me to see the difference (or more accurately, see a difference). But where two colours are the same except for the amount of red in them*, I normally won't see a difference between them, or will struggle immensely to do so**.

*Such as browns/greens, grays/pinks, and purples/blues.

**This bit me on the ass once in an art class. We were drawing seed pods and things, so I drew this lovely picture in what was (to me) an exact colour match. However, I'd picked bright green to represent a mid brown, because with the red removed, they seemed the same.

So is it in your case a problem with photoreceptors then? Is there any kind of continuum or blurryness that you experience or more something akin to a distinct switch beyond which lies the point of "well fuck"-ness?

Edit: I'm sorry if I'm being too inquisitive, but well...I'm honestly curious.

Nothing noticeable as a 'switch', I just don't pick up on shades of red in colours.

So if we both looked at a spectrum from red to green, someone with normal eyes sees red at one end, green at the other, and various shades of brown inbetween. I see red at one end, a lot less shades of brown, and green filling quite a bit more space.

One of my friends is colourblind and had the worst battery charger for this. When it was still charging, the light would be solid red. When it was done charging it would be solid green. When I was over and he was charging batteries, he'd ask me what colour the light was.
