A tax on soda? I knew more taxes were coming, I just didn't think they'd have the cajones to try and pass it off as health care reform.

Yeah, typically you'd see something like this with the irrelevant term "family" tacked on to it somewhere.

"Think of the children! They don't have enough money to pay all these taxes!"

There was a recent piece of legislation called the Family Smoking Prevention Act that was nothing more than a tax increase and a bundle of legislation clearly designed to give Philip Morris even more control over the market. It had nothing to do with families except perhaps those of Altria's shareholders.

There have been others, but that's one of the most recent ones.

Both together.

"Think of the children! Soda is bad for them! If we put taxes on them, they won't be able to afford them!"

Then, of course, we can all go to happy happy joy land that's filled with other people who think this will actually work.

That's ridiculous. Then again, most act names are stupid and uninspired.

It was never meant to "work". It was meant to put a tax on something that we use a lot of, therefore generating revenue for the government's new programs. There was once a time when that was considered that offensive enough to raid ships and cover people in uncomfortable substances.

People always talk about spending more time with the family...what better way to achieve that than a family smoke after dinner?

Actually, I could think of at least two better ways to achieve that.

One rhymes with cheer and snookers, and the other rhymes with pentacle rex.

You would need to put a shitload of effort in to grow tobacco in the north of England :p

That said, I do buy tobacco, Rizla+ etc. instead of packs of cigarettes.

You could grow it pretty easily over this way, but the once in a blue moon I actually do smoke is just not justification enough to do so, Im afraid...

Taxing sugar?

If you really want to get technical, sugars are present in everything we eat (Hell, that's WHY we eat them), and are necessary for the production of adenosine triphosphate (Cellular Respiration, the very definition of if something is alive or not).

So why doesn't he just make extra taxes for all foods, hmm?

I would support a few cents tax on soda and sugary drinks. (It would have to be capped at 10 cents per gallon maximum)
