The Partition of India

Postby Spiral Sun » Fri Mar 09, 2012 8:23 am

Should it have happened? Should it have happened as it did?

What level of input should leaders of the Princely States have had? The Indians invaded Sikkhim, which was never part of British India, because of the populace, yet they used the claim of the Hindu prince in Kasmir to annex them, despite them wanting to be an independent state. This also went for Bhopal, Travancor, Hyberbad, and a number of other states. Having Bengal be unified or seperate from Pakistan was also never an option, neither were the Dravidians(Those who made sure English was one of India's official languages instead of just Hindu) given the chance of their own, as most of their independent states where then invaded.

As for the states made on religion.... Hindu seems to just a title used to plaster over the non-Abrahamic beliefs of the Ganges watershed. This ignored the local diversity, overwhelming local majorities, causing it to basically be that only some regions with absolute Muslim majority where placed into Pakistan, a land which had the Punjabi dominate Bengal, despite Bengal having a majority between Pakistan. A Sikh Khalistan is Punjab was also ignored, despite how the region was divided between Hindu and Muslim and having a highly militant group who's beliefs were a fusion of both might have helped.

No, it should not have happened. There might have been civil war for a while, but we would not be seeing the region on the brink of Nuclear War now.

It's been that way for years, and I don't see why keeping it as a series of petty princedoms would really be in anyone's interest - even now, Indian politics is aggressively localised, and this is probably Not A Good Thing. Also, civil wars are BAD. Even the Pakistan civil war killed hundreds of thousands and caused millions of refugees to pour out around the world. I don't think embroiling the whole of India in that kind of mess is in anyone's interest.

The main problem with the Partition was the pre-separation reliance the British/Indian government had on the Northwest Provinces to supply troops for its military - this has left a very serious legacy in which (West) Pakistan was highly militarised from the start and has had problems developing any kind of civilian government. I'm not going to argue about whether this was probably a result of the NWP being seen as a badlands, or that this culture was pre-existing, but yeah. This is one of the main problems.

I was busy killing Pakistanis.

Partition was probably a necessary evil, but if both sides had tried harder, we could have prevented it from ever occurring.

It was most likely necessary.

Asking the British to stay for a decade or so to clean the mess was too much to ask for, I guess, so the easier option was just to segregate us.

Well there were many in Britain that wanted to try, but their solutions all involved India becoming a Dominion, not total Independence like the Indian People wanted.

Personally, as a half-Jut-Sikh I feel that the Partition was necessary at the time, but Pakistan should've been re-assimilated as soon as tensions cooled, with both sides meeting an equal agreement. That would honestly solve many problems currently in Pakistan and help Islam-Hindu relations.

It was a necessary good, otherwise India would have been a sole superpower in the region. In fact, British should have left it (politically) in state it initially was.

We'd have just made Nepal a state and it'd be better off than it is now.

Considering India started waving white flag while Nepal didn't, I dont suppose so.

This might evoke some outrage, but I think it would be better for the region if India assimilated Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan..

India's economy is already improving.. With the rest of the nations near them, they can potentially control the manufacturing sector for transnational corporations in South Asia.

It was just split in 5 groups, with one controlling about 80% of India. Not to mention, each of those states were stronger than Nepal in gross fire-power.
Yet British managed to force all five to raise white flags, so again for your statement - I think not.

Surrendering to a state that surrendered without even a real fight? No. If anything Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal should be giving Chinese back scratch, they all have territories to retake from a common enemy - so they could work together.
