CNN) -- A Johns Hopkins University student killed an apparent burglar with a samurai sword after discovering the man in his garage, police said Tuesday.

Baltimore, Maryland, police received a phone call shortly before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday about a suspicious person, and an off-duty officer arrived at the scene with campus security, city police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

When authorities arrived, they heard calls for help and for police, he said. They discovered a suspected burglar with a severed left hand and severe lacerations to his upper body, Guglielmi said.

The suspect died at the scene, he said.

The man had entered a home where several Johns Hopkins students lived, Guglielmi said. Four students, one armed with a samurai sword, had confronted the suspect in the garage.

The man "lunged" at the students, and the student with the sword defended himself, severing the man's left hand and cutting his upper body, Guglielmi said.

Police did not release the name of the suspect, who Guglielmi said had a long criminal history, or that of the student.

Police questioned the three witnesses, Guglielmi said, and released them. It was not immediately clear whether all four students lived at the house, he said.

Authorities are determining whether the student will face criminal charges, Guglielmi said.

Burglars had taken two laptops and a Sony PlayStation from the students' home Monday, Guglielmi said.

The burglary suspect had been released from prison Saturday, Guglielmi said.

In short, "fascist" is a modern word for "heretic," branding an individual worthy of excommunication from the body politic. The right uses otherwords ("reverse-racist," "feminazi," "unamerican," "communist") for similiar purposes, but these words have less elastic meanings. Fascism, however, is the gift that keeps on giving. - Jonah Goldberg, revisited.

The student face criminal charges?

I suppose if one needs a license for a katana, but that would really be a dick move.

More likely not a katana, but an iaito, a practice metal sword, or some kind of replica.

Even although not as deadly, it is fairly lethal in the hands of someone strong enough as to pull weight behind the blade. An enlarged kitchen knife is still as dangerous as you might guess a giant kitchen knife would be.

Lol. The student if it does go to trial would have a very good sound defense. The Burglar was in his place uninvited I bet, you can't blame some one for protecting his place. In, Texas you can shoot people from your property, in TN, you can shoot people who break-in, and in FL you can shoot to kill people on your property.

Not really surprising, as some types of kitchen knives are a hell of a lot sharper than a sword.

Why would they make a practice sword sharper than the real deal? That seems like the exact opposite of what they should be doing.

Japanese practice swords are sharper than european or arabic ones, got it?

I have never, ever wielded a true katana in my hands. Those are supposed to be pretty much sharper than practice ones.

A kitchen knife is good for careful cutting as is its jobs, whereas a sword is meant to make big traumatizing wounds in people. Sort of the same reason bullets aren't sharpened to the same degree as arrows. Not to mention that very sharp edges are very hard to maintain on a weapon that is going to be used in battle, and greatly increase the likelihood of a notch or chip in the blade.

The person who killed (in self defence) will have to deal with even more trama feeling at fault or knowing that it could have been him who bleed to death had the attacker managed to take the sword.

This seems to have been justified self defense and thus fully legal and right but it was not "Awesome"
