Something for the musos.

I have to say, although some will think it sacrilege, that Demons & Wizards' cover of "Immigrant Song" is better than the original. A metal edge does wonders for that song.

Anything originally done by Leonard Cohen. I like Leonard Cohen. I really do. But...

Anything by Aretha Franklin. She's the only artist I can think of who beat out both the Beatles and the Stones with her covers of "Elanor Rigby" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash," respectively. Also, Warren Zevon's cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is the best rendition of the song committed to tape as of this writing, and possibly one of the greatest covers of all time.
"I am the Elder King: Melkor, first and mightiest of the Valar, who was before the world, and made it. The shadow of my purpose lies upon Arda, and all that is in it bends slowly and surely to my will. But upon all whom you love my thought shall weigh as a cloud of Doom, and it shall bring them down into darkness and despair."

Shock horror, a mod posting in MY thread without the post containing the words "warned" or "banned".

Any cover Tori Amos does. I think she rocked Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" and Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue-Raincoat". Also, she did an amazing job with A Perfect Circle's ''Hollow'' and ''Enjoy the Silence". Of course, I enjoy the piano a lot so...

So very seconded, though I feel shame. Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" and Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla's cover of "Anthem" far exceed the originals.

Funny you should choose that particular phrasing...was it intentional?

Everybody knows that you love me, baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Give or take a night or two
Everybody knows that you've been discreet
But there were just so many people that you had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Dylan's voice is uniquely suited to Dylan's original creations.

A non-Dylan voice singing a Dylan composition just cannot have the same effect, and so such covers are inherently inferior.

Her covers are good---I enjoy her cover of "Landside" much more than the original---but citing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is just blasphemy.

Except Jimi Hendrix taking a mediocre Dylan song like All along the watchtower and making something better of it

I might get beat up for this, but the Deftones' cover of Sade's "No Ordinary Love."

Joe Cocker's "I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends" far exceeds the Beatles' original.

Nina Simone covers are usually better than the originals - I put a spell on you, for example, is better than Screamin' Jay Hawkins' original

That's...actually pretty good. I didn't know about it previously. Turning a Britney song into something listenable is no mean feat.

Not a great cover, but serviceable.

The start has a bit of a The Killers vibe, and then it goes a bit rock-crazy.
