But... where, precisely, does the OP think the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes originally came from? Northamptonshire?

Hey, you forgot us Norwegians! We nearly conquered Britain in 1066, at the battle of Stamford Bridge... It wasn't only Danes who invaded Britain, you know!

Hey... most of them Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Eutes were from what now is Germany... you Vikings took your time invading England, we were there first.

And two other points... er... three other points:

a) your schoolsystem in the United Queendom of Northern Ireland and the GB is only slightly less confusing to us others than the rules of Cricket...

b) everyone: get your hands on Billy Braggs album "England half English"... to quote from it " Britannia, she's half English, she speaks Latin at home. Saint George was born in the Lebanon, how he got here I don't know"

c) (not as funny as before) saying Hitler just rose to power because of the Versailles Treaty is dangerously apologetic and plays right into the hands of the modern Nazis who rear up their ugly heads these days...

So much for my three Pfennig...

Cheers,

Tom

It's a little known fact that cricket doesn't actually have rules. It's all a scam to keep some drunken, traumatised soldiers(aka the Barmy Army) away from football matches.

True, but the basic point is that Britain's been subject to waves of immigrants for centuries. After all, the Scots were originally from Ireland.

And the Norwegians didn't 'almost' conquer Britain at Stamford Bridge; it was about as one-sided a rout as you're ever likely to see in medieval British history; largely because the Norwegians had taken most of their armour off due to the unseasonably warm weather. Out of an invasion fleet of 300 ships, only 24 returned to Norway. And even then Harald's claim to the throne was pitifully thin; he only invaded because Harold Godwinson's brother Tostig was in a snit and had asked for outside help.

Ah yes but the real point of the whole episode was that once again it was those "southern softies" piling north to show the local monkeys how it ought to be done ;)

As to the whole armour story, well while there appears to be a lot of support in the sources for it being the case that Haradda's lads had taken their clobber off I doubt it was the cause of their defeat. Most of the troops facing them would have been select Fyrd and not professional Huscarls and likely had not more protection themselves than a couple of panels of willow board lashed together (yes I know I am being really rude about the noble art of shield construction in the period but it's for rhetorical effect :P ) .

More likely it was the fact that unusually the Norse seem to have panicked and as Xenophon (I think  correct attribution please someone) said "It is by flight that an army leaves itself open to the greater loss." The effect would have been that the Vikings made to flee and the English army having forward momentum and not being impeded by its own rear ranks mowed them down.

But yeah as to your main point one of the contenders for the root origin of the Fairy myth is that it refers to the pre-iron age brythonic peoples who got clobbered by more Celtic or Celtic influenced immigrants.

I can forgive the British for bringing diseases, predators and guns to New Zealand.

But I can never forgive them for introducing cricket. I'm totally on side with the Yanks when it comes to cricket: It sucks.

Well I always played rugby at which I was quite good while being demonstrably inept at cricket.

It is entirely possible that your explanation at last solves the mystery.

Wait, you need a penis to play rugby? The closest thing to rugby in the states is American Football, but now I understand why I couldn't play!

You don't need one, per se, but you won't get very far at the highest levels of the sport without one.

That doesn't really fit with the layout of the battlefield, or the way the battle unfolded.

1) Harold II Godwinson marches the elite core of his army up from London in only four days, utterly surprising the wholly unprepared Tostig and Hardrada, who didn't know the English army was anywhere near them until it appeared on the battlefield.

2) English troops find some of the northern coalition army divided on two sides of the bridge, and not armoured properly. The opposing troops on the wrong side of the bridge are quickly routed.

3) Pursuit of routing coalition halted, possibly by a single Norse axeman (depending on whether you believe the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle or not).

4) Coalition army on the east side of the bridge take advantage of the pause to form a shield wall; shield walls clash.

5) Clash continues for some hours, but English start to break through shield wall - there is no sudden panic.

6) Hardrada and Tostig are both killed; northern army begins to disintegrate.

7) Eystein Orri force marches the Norse rearguard from defence of their ships to the battlefield; these troops are properly armoured and initially hold the English advance - though since some collapse from exhaustion on reaching the battle, presumably they weren't in the best of shape either.

8.) Orri killed; with all three of its leaders dead, the northern army collapses, and wholesale slaughter ensues.

So a combination of Godwinson's surprise forced march, the lack of armour on most of the opposing army, and the division of the opposing army on both sides of the River Derwent seem to have been the primary issues. The flight - and subsequent slaughter - was the result of their defeat, not the cause.

Near-total destruction of the opposing army once it breaks was a common enough phenomenon at the time, and was hardly a unique experience for Norse invaders of England. When Alfred the Great defeated Guthrum at Edington in 878 AD (quoting Asser's Life of Alfred), "fighting ferociously, forming a dense shield-wall against the whole army of the Pagans, and striving long and bravely, at last he gained the victory. He overthrew the Pagans with great slaughter, and smiting the fugitives, he pursued them as far as the fortress". So not that different from Stamford Bridge, really, except that Guthrum survived Edington.
