I don't know if it can be called a mental illness or not, but I DO know for a fact that it is dangerous, that it is destructive, and that it is anti-human. How is it anti-human? Allow me to explain: Religion is about subordinating your free will and self-interest to a higher power that, regardless of factual presence, has done absolutely nothing to earn your devotion, nor is it deserved. It also demands silent, unquestioned conformity, the kind you would find in any collectivist society. The merits of the individual in a religion are irrelevant and all that matters is a so-called "greater good". A religion would sooner drive us all toward self-destruction than ever do anything of help to us. Indeed, many say that humanity, ESPECIALLY the individual, is inherently evil and that any who deviate from the "norm" are heretics to be burnt at the stake. In the end, I say we give the gods exactly what they deserve and kill them all. And for those who are very likely to take that last line all too literally, I mean we, as a species, should wake up, and abandon this madness known as faith once and for all. We need nothing to "worship" except for ourselves.

I personally have no problem with religion or god but I am wary of believers/worshipers. Not of all of them, but for those who attempt to define something in their own ways and pass it on as part of the religion. If we had no religion, I fear that things would not be any better. Religion at least unites a certain group of people whereas "worship" of humanity could cause unnecessary chaos. I personally believe that I will remain faithful to my religion however I believe that god has given us free will and in return simply wants us to thank him/her, which I have no problem doing. I don't see it as giving up free will because it is not as if I'm being restricted many things in my religion(and those things I am restricted from make logical sense in some way or another, even if they are debatable).

Simply, I believe a human should not assume that because they have faith in a religion they should assume that they possess no free will. They should also trust themselves in deciding what is good or not. The "greater good" thing in my opinion is a man-made belief that has been implemented slowly into the religious system over centuries, basically nothing but a bait for those who suffer. I believe that this should not be the case as those who adopt a religion and have a faith should do so with self-esteem and confidence. They should show that they trust in both god and themselves rather than join to reap benefits from others.

You can't possibly serve the greater good without having greatness to yourself. You must be proud to be human and proud that you were given your life. Since people are basically created by god, showing respect to yourself would be showing respect to god.

In many ways, you are right. Pride in being human IS something we should possess, though I am curious as to what you mean by "'worship' of humanity could cause unnecessary chaos." As for your take on the "greater good", I can't say for certain if that is true or not because I do not know if there is proof of it, so we'll agree to disagree on that one. As for god creating us, what else has he done? Most of the time, he and his disciples have done things that are utterly vile (Job whoring out his daughters simply to save angels from them when it should have been the other way around, condemning Adam and Eve for eating from the tree of knowledge, telling Abraham to kill his son Isaac, etc.), these are NOT something a loving god should ever do. We never even said he was ALLOWED to rule over us, a leader should rule with the consent of the people, and not the promise of force. And this is all assuming he exists to begin with.

Well, current scientific technologies anyways. As of the moment though, religion as a whole is an unfalsifiable preposition, and out of the probability of its existence being correct is the probability of which religion out of that is the correct one. As such, I do not belive any faith has a greater signifigant probability than another of being correct, and I do tend to lean more towards atheistic style thinking, but I cannot help but maintain my "weak-agnostic" position. While I do think most religions are nothing more than illogical arbitrary 'moral' stories, I don't think that rules them out from possibly existing either
