I was somewhat shocked by the comments you had in the OP, as I just went to Spain for the first time three months ago and had the complete opposite impression. I flew in from England, and found it cleaner and more efficient, particularly in terms of the public transport (no offense to you Brits, I'm being honest here). Everything ran on time, and I felt that there was a good balance between hard work and leisure. To me, it was a stark contrast to my years spent in Canada, which I found relatively backward in terms of its use of technology and public transport. That said, I loved it there and hope to move back soon.

Where exactly are you going? I was blown away by Bizkaia and am hoping to return there next summer, with the addition of Gipuzkoa and Navarra.

I have the same dichotomy in my life. I am half "livin' la vida loca" latina, and half "hard working stub nosed progressive northern european". It is hard for me to find a balance between the two. Sometimes I think I have two personalities. It's truly, truly complex. Sometimes I live to work, sometimes I work to live.

The problem is, no matter what I do, I am the pariah everywhere I go. I work to live too much for my spanish/basque family, and I live to work too much for Venezuela. I find the Basque Country too boring, and Venezuela too disorganized for my tastes. In other words, I'm fucked up no matter what.

Move to Miami?
Go there, you will find it truly different to Andalucía, (unless you go there while the fiestas, when the cities turn into Andalucía for a week). If I can recommend you a place, try Vitoria, it is a small city, almost a toy city, where everything is highly traditional, and yet everything is clean, neat, and perfect. And more "live to work" people.

I think there is some kind of big fiesta up in a certain area we are going to be in this weekend, actually. Recommendation taken, thank you.
And don't let Nanatsu read that part about the "richest part of Spain is not spanish", she is going to have a seizure. And any catalán is going to hang you on a post for saying that Catalunya is not the richest part of Spain.

The Basque Autonomous Community is currently the wealthiest region in Spain, with gross domestic product (GDP) per capita being 40% higher than that of the European Union and 33,8% higher than Spain's average in 2008, at 31,110 EUR (43,500 USD as of 2009)

Bilbao to start off with, as we will probably be arriving there. From there I'll go with my friend who is up there and invited me, so we'll see.

No way. I actually hate Miami in particular and Florida in general. I think it has the worst of two worlds, with only a few good things of the both. I have been there several times, and I hate the Miamian latino stereotype. Miami is quite popular for venezuelans, however. I could go and live in Boston, maybe. Perhaps, perhaps New York, but never Miami.

I spent a week away from home, but it wasn't in a new country, though it might as well have been.

I went to the Big City (US), thats right, Memphis. It was pretty wild. Very, VERY different from where I lived.

Meh, it's not for everyone. I love it and enjoy the cuban culture in Miami, for example.

Yeah, I guess a lot of people like it. A lot of people here in Venezuela like it. However, they are a large part of the people in Venezuela that I don't like.

I guess it is good for some people, not for me, however. I just really don't like it.

Uhmmm, because the culture is similar to Miami?

Actually, it is the ORIGINAL frame of the Miami culture.

Miami has devolved into a bunch of gringo teenagers who think they're Latino.

I hate Communism, and everything about the Cuban model. I'd never live there. I like Miami for many reasons, and just one of the things I like is the cuban culture there. That hardly even close to THE reason I like it, however.

Sometimes, though, if I'm in a Spanish area for too long or in an area where people DON'T speak English, I get annoyed, though. I mean like ...only speaks spanish and no english.

Um, no. I was joking about American roads not being well maintained, and the people actually being dicks. Plus the cars we make here are crap.

I was joking that you werent really in America, because America doesnt have those things. See? Funny. Hahaha.

The cars made here are fine. The cars made here are amazing compared to Soviet cars. The roads are well maintained compared to Soviet roads. The people are nice compared to Russians. There is trust, I explained in another thread how UPS just leaves packages, sometimes with valuables, at the door. That would never happen in the Soviet Union, because they would be instantly stolen. Street lights that actually light the streets. Because some hooligans don't constantly break them. I am in America and your joke is anything but funny.

Chill the fuck out man.

Of course not, the language of Spain is spanish. I meant in America if I'm in a place that is very hispanic where people can't really speak english, it's a bit annoying. I enjoy spanish, understand it fine, but just don't like when people (who are living in the country) can't speak the language. By the way, that applies to any area, not just a latin area.

Well, back from Basque Country. Interesting place. Quite distinct and unique and 100% not Spanish. Enjoyable to visit, but the weather was simply awful. As I was told it always is there.
