Fishing Thread. Finally, a thread about, well, fishing!

Postby Ravineworld » Tue Feb 21, 2012 3:15 pm

I love fishing, and I have since I was a little kid. Going out to a nature preserve, seeing and hearing birds, bees, and everything in between, while watching and waiting and hoping that maybe today you'll catch "The Big One™" :p. To me, it is a break from normal life, a way to release myself while hoping for a big fish and dreaming about trips around the world to catch fish and experience nature. Even talking and arguing with people on NS over politics comes no where even close to enjoying a day of lazyness at a local pond. But enough about me, because this is the thread for learning other people's experiences on the water, to enjoy a good controversy on favorite equipment and baits, and to have a place to discuss species and other fun parts of fishing. Basically, a thread dedicated to the discussion of, drumroll please... FISHING.
So, NSG, to start off this conversation, here are a few questions for anybody who fishes as a hobby, or even just for fun:
What species do you tend to fish for?
Any favorite Baits?
On a scale of one to ten, one being "I don't care" and ten being "I am willing to murder for a chance to fish at a halfway good lake", how much do you like fishing?

Enjoy!
PS: I am pretty sure this is the right forum, but if it isn't please tell me :)

I've been fishing in a pond before. Used worms, caught some catfish. Went fishing in a lake and caught nothing.

Small fish can be fun to catch. Perch are pretty sweet and make great eating.

I don't have the patience to sit around waiting for fish to bite so I don't go fishing often. I've rarely had much success in catching anything. Fishing falls under the category of "Things I don't do well because there's luck involved."

Fishing is fucking awesome. Unfortunately, I haven't gone fishing in almost a decade, but that's life, right?

The only fish I ever caught was when I jumped in a pond and crushed it's spine

it made a good dinner, though :meh:

I've despised fishing since I was young. Despite this fact, I've still gone some several times. I rarely catch anything, though.

I love fishing, though it hasn't been the same since my granddad passed away. We always used to try and ot fish each other. Of course he always won, though he never caught an eel, which I did.

Haven't been fishing in a few years though, which is sad, seeing as how my family has a private lake with plenty of fish in it.

I'll be ruthlessly honest, I saw this in the Latest Forum Topics and read it as "Fisting Thread. Finally,..." >_<

Not so sure about fishing per se, but I like fish :)

I miss fishing. :(

Back in the States it was something I did every summer with my family. Trout fishing on various lakes and streams (Either trawling from a boat or bank fishing with powerbait) and of course trying to hook a salmon on the Klamath.

I just haven't had the chance to work out Japan's regs in terms of river fishing (The river in my town apparently offers some good fish) so instead I've just caught snack trout on various stocked fish ponds where I admit the fun is watching people from Tokyo screw up catching fish that will strike on bubblegum on a bent pin and clothesline.

But... I do have some rods my grandfather left me here in Japan, all I need is some time and I'll pass on the joys of fishing to my sons.

And let me wife enjoy the catch. :)

I imagine you buy it. I am looking in to buying a private island, so I imagine its rather the same.

Well if I remember correctly, it used to be a clay mine before the miners hit a natural spring. The mine flodded, then my family puchased it. Apperantly we used to be better off then we are now. Since then its been in our family. Its not a very big lake, mind you. But it is nice to have somewhere to go when life pisses you off.

My grandparents have a private pond. It's not a lake, but it's still something...Anyways, they got it by digging it out, themselves, on their own property.

I used to like fishing for crab of Llandudno pier when I was a kid. Always got one too. I wonder if they actually survive being thrown back from that height?

Interesting that it seems grandfathers are often the ones to start one off in fishing, it was the same for me.

On a slightly different tangent, when I first went to Tokyo about the first thing I did was head to the arcades, expecting the latest in amazing games and kick-ass fighting etc.,

Instead I found they were mostly stocked with dance games, jumping around on flashing lights, landing a jumbo jet at a selection of runways and... virtual fishing.

I was so disappointed.

Get an old man and a young boy anywhere near a body of water and their hands will automatically sprout fishing rods. :p

But, yeah, it's a generational thing I think.

Japan loves simulation games, though again I'm not sure how a nation that has so many fishing games can turn out so many bad fishermen.

Don't get me wrong, the actual fishermen in Japan are amazing, it's just... yeah, how do you fail to set the hook 5 times?

I don't like the taste of fish so even though I enjoy catching them I rarely go fishing, I feel strange doing all that work just to send them back. EDIT: I also feel bad for making them bite a hook.
