It seems that you Republicans are desperate to have that mormon as the republican presidential candidate, I mean supposing you were an american and a republican (i am neither), how could you cast your vote for mitt romney? the man is part of the most ludicrous and most obviously man made religion i can think of, its not only ludicrous but allied with racism, sexism and bigotry as well, could there be a worse candidate to run the "land of the free"? Obama is by no means perfect, but at least he doesn't believe that ridiculous book full of false religious dogma, written by the lifelong opiate smoker, and founder of the mormon church, joseph smith, who claims to have seen an angel who told him where these "golden plates" were buried so that he could dig them up and translate them from some unspeakable hebrew dialect into what would become the book of mormon. and when someone took away the translations (which he had obviously made up) and asked him to repeat them exactly so that he could prove he really was translating from golden plates, and he said that god had given him a different set of plates so he couldnt translate what he had before, these "plates" also propounded the extremely racist doctrine that black people were special but lesser creations of god, and that the colour of their skin was a sign that they were inferior, why would anyone believe in this idiocy? why would anyone vote for a man that did? I'd be interested to hear from any of you Republicans out there on NS?

Apparently, LDS aren't christians despite the fact it says that RIGHT ON THE FUCKIN' BUILDING. Seriously, Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints. Just, the sheer bigotry in this thread against a faith I was raised in is just... infuriating. Apparently, a faith that was raised on a basis as much as any other christian doctrine is silly. Religion shouldn't play a role in government. Why we have separation of church and state. Just because of the fact that a lot of us believe in the word of the prophet doesn't mean it will influence the actions. We understand that we, should be oh hey, better people. But also, this issue was solved with JFK. He had the Pope to contend with.

However, the church in itself is not sexist. It is not homophobic, it is not racist either. I grew up in a Mormon household and am a very active member in my church. I'm a Bishop for Christ's sake. I don't hate black people, I don't think they are inferior or any sort of 'special project'. They are a natural adaptation to a highly sun-soaked region. That's the general consensus of the church and its members. I actually have seen in several churches, a higher rate of black attendance than white. Some of the churches I've headed have had large amounts of black priesthood holders. Some of the missions I've conducted have had strong black groups. Now, that whole citation I saw earlier about the church not letting blacks serve in the priest hood until 1979? That whole period was racist. The whole civil rights movement? Was meant to fix that.

I mean seriously, just... just ask and try to get your shit straight. Or you could also look a the history that helped influence the development of why we are secretive [getting shot simply for being LDS], we store up, [Again, getting shot], and all the other shit you guys are saying that makes a Mormon unsafe for a government role.

But, again religion shouldn't factor in. Should stay simply within their policies and their capabilities.

Yeah, sorry, not impressed with the whole "other people were racist too!" thing. Especially since Joseph Smith was an ABOLITIONIST, but your religion back-slid so far that you wouldn't even let black people hold the priesthood any more.

The Mormon church is less racist now. It's still profoundly sexist (don't even try to argue that one when women can't hold the priesthood), and profoundly homophobic. INDIVIDUAL MORMONS may rise above this bigotry, and good for them, but the LDS faith is still one with entrenched, systemic, and ingrained bigotry.

But don't feel bad. That's true of ALL the Abrahamic religions. You're not being singled out. Each of the religions in that "family" has an equally crappy history, in their own special ways.
