As I said in another thread, Teabaggers generally don't know the Constitution from their right testicle.

As for their history, they get that out of a Cracker Jack box.

Well, they are rather familiar with the parts of the Constitution they want to do away with. (the Establishment Clause and birthright citizenship)

And their history comes from Gone with the Wind and Birth of a Nation.

hoi, you know full well that conservatives the world over resent being compared with the radical reactionaries passing themselves off under that title in the US :p

Real conservatives even in America don't think it is okay to insult people they don't happen to like.

No true scostman is a fallacy as always. "real conservatives" are whatever conservatism has been defined as by the people using it. Self-identifying conservatives are largely whiny morons who are fueled entirely by a hatred of others.

Not true at all sir/madame/basement dwelling interwebz type person (select address of choice)

It is actually quite easy to look at conservatism and identify historical trends (which one might argue is what conservatism is all about were it not for things like whig liberalism very famously perceiving an historical trend).

Generally the concept does trend to minimum change which is off course not always a good thing but the modern day Republican party does not seem to be about espousing minimum change at all. In fact they espouse dramatic changes to long established norms of American behaviour precisely because they are reactionaries and reactionaries are about reacting (hence the name gettit?) to changes that they perceive as harming them (harm though is rather a nebulous term here, often translating as the "ol system gave me a massive advantage I wanna keep eet!" ). The radical reactionaries strive to be populist which is not a traditionally conservative position and if a position is not traditional it is not conservative and that is why organisations like the tea party cannot honestly be described as conservative because they advocate massive changes to not merely American Government but its Constitution.

Conservatism is about keeping things the same (especially constitutions) and the only way you can describe the current GOP (once the party of Lincoln but who recalls that now :( ) as conservative is if you have all the moral fibre of a Rick Santorum.

One of the most worrying trends of current American politics is the polarisation of attitudes. Forgotten is the possibility that a person can hold political views from right across the political spectrum without being an evil traitor to the cause and that compromise with a reality or simply another viewpoint is not a defeatist attitude of the weak in faith. Yet comfort can be drawn from the fact that the future is not a wheel or a slope but in fact a wavy snake and it can go anyway, America might well (I ought to say most likely will but RS threads always provoke a profound sense of gloom about the human condition) return to the concept of reasoned debate dominating politics ( "we are the 41%" personally I think it's catchy :p ) and confine the wild eyed loonies to the fringes of interweb forums and fone in wireless watchummahcallit.

You know, "Frothy" doesn't have to be sexual. You could also use it to signify Santorum's lack of real substance. (Yes, I know the neologism was specifically meant to be sexual).

No, that makes him an average candidate in a pathetic field. The one candidate I was truly excited for was Governor Rick Perry given his incredible economic success as governor of Texas, however the spotlight was too bright and couldn't remember his talking points. After that, we've got an average field featuring an isolationist, a guy who cheated on his ex-wives, a social candidate, and the GOP's version of John Kerry. That'll never hold up over the long haul.

Perry had no economic success.

Okay now I am hungry and eating while reading a Rick Santorum thread is not a good idea as before long someone will post an RS quote that will make me want to vomit.

Now seriously I am sure that Santorum is good to his family, kind to his children and nice to his friends. He is not the spawn of Satan unless of course Satan is a rather tepid and boring. Still he does seem to have opinions on people and conditions he has not personally experienced that are unforgivably appalling combined with a lack of understanding of the mechanisms of Government he wishes the electorate to place under his control and worst of all a complete unwillingness to learn, at all, even from his own past mistakes.

How's this then? Loving V. Virginia: Marriage is a right.
