I love this thread. It is non political and to every question there is an agreed upon correct answer :) And it is so abstract that no one is so emotionally involved with their argument that they refuse to accept others points.

edit: Oh and the fact that we can have this large of a thread on Dif EQ speaks to the coolness factor of some posters on NS. (But not me because I don't remember enough of it)

If we can get it going strong enough, this thread could be highly educational.
A little homework for you!

What part of L(f(t)) = Int(exp(-s*t)*f(t),t,0,inf) don't you understand?

Yeah it could :) teach me something I forgot about Diff EQ. I'll read it when I wake up and be happy.

While we are on the subject of Diff Eq's, can you please fix your signature? The LHS has a wrong order of operators.

Oh, you mean how the Laplace transform as I've written it is technically an abuse of notation?

The way I usually see it notated in a technical fashion is either:

L{f(t)}(s)

or

L[f(t)](s)

Is that better? Would you also prefer that I never use Leibniz notation because that is also technically wrong?

Very useful book, although a bit beyond the budget of most. Luckily the school library has it.

I'm finding http://www.amazon.com/Applied-Differential-Equations-Undergraduate-Mathematics/dp/0387209530/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253223546&sr=8-1 to be an extremely useful supplement to my PDE textbook.

I blow all my excess money on:

1) Textbooks

2) Video Games

Does anyone else have this problem?

Why do you guys love maths so much?

It's just an abstract.

1,000,001 + 1,000,001 = 2,000,002?

And then to polynomials.

it's what's keeping your computer running, you know. without the math to describe the physical equations involved in the actual physical construction of the computer components, or the math describing the algorithms running on your PC, we wouldn't be having this online discussion to begin with.

It's an abstract with a great number of physically useful applications. Also, arithmetic =/= all of math.
