Race. Whats the point?

Postby Bavin » Sat Sep 12, 2009 5:36 pm

I don't get the concept of race. Really, what difference does melanin levels and recurring traits make in a person's character?
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.- Carl Sagan

I agree. Race is stupid based on ignorant outdated models of centuries ago. We are all Africans! :)

Seriously though, the concept of race is it exists today is primarily there to identify people. If you're in a crowd of white people and there's one black guy doing something awesome like... uh... riding a unicycle made of fire, you can say "HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THAT BLACK DUDE" instead of "HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THAT DUDE WITH THE BLACK HAIR AND UH AVERAGE CLOTHES".

I mean, in this case you can say "OH GOD UNICYCLE OF FIRE," but the point stands.

Race is a mild regional variation in genetics caused by geographic isolation. The genetic variation between individuals is far greater than that caused by isolation and that geographic isolation no longer exists. The races as they exist now are obsolete, yet for some reason people feel somewhat attached to their own brand of isolated variation. There always seems to be someone willing to wail and gnash his teeth over his inability to keep something that constantly changes from changing. I think under other circumstances it'd be amusing.

That falls under recurring traits.

Also, what LG said.

Yes that what we call people of two different races.

No, that's what we call people composed of multiple wavelengths.

How so? I didn't think that there was much of an intellectual difference between the races.

Race is important because it's a part of our individual identities and is sometimes a basis for the formation of communities.
