This is just awful. I don't understand how much power those religious organizations can still have in Minnesota; I mean, it's a pretty liberal state from what I've heard. Clearly, you haven't experienced small-town government firsthand. Vast majority of local officials are corrupt hicks with no experience, little education, ran for office because no one else would, and got stuck in that small town instead of moving on because they generally fail at life. The towns themselves are always strapped for cash, the officials need to hire consultants for everything because they're incompetent, and usually the state handles all of the major public works projects.

As a fellow Minnesotan, it really isn't. I've been to true conservative hell-hole states. Minnesota, as a state, is moderate to liberal. There are conservative hell-hole areas of Minnesota, but that's not the same thing. Trust me on this one.

It's just Michelle Bachman's area of the state, the rest is fine, as far as I know.
Because some apparently there are people here who still think she's good enough to put in congress. :/

It might even only be that school, but there was a rule where teachers weren't allowed to get involved in any kind of argument/bullying/discussion/etc. that involved homosexuality. Which basically meant that if someone was being harassed for being gay, the teacher couldn't break it up whether or not the student was gay or not. I don't know how violent it was allowed to get before they could do something, but I assume it was only verbal disputes that were to be ignored.
My school's Gay-Straight Alliance was actually planning a "field trip" of sorts to visit a school in her district and talk about the program and why their rules are harmful.

I think most of the small towns are conservative hellholes.
My town, in specific, is probably more moderate, though.
We have a lot of really liberal teachers, and a lesbian principal, at least, so a lot of the kids that go through school here are lucky enough to not have to worry to such an extent, and most of them, if they aren't already too brainwashed beforehand, end up graduating pretty open-minded.
But since we also have a lot of farmland/population of 6 towns/lakes/otherwise uninhabited area(?), I'm pretty sure most of the population lives in St. Paul and Minneapolis, which, as large cities, tend to be more liberal. Which, I think is why we end up voting liberal.
