To be honest, normally you could ignore people like these. The trouble, as demonstrated in the OP, is that some of these fundamentalist assholes can influence policy that affects us all. In this case, the assholes are directly responsible for the deaths of 9 children. If I were a totalitarian dictator, I'd hold them responsible and have them thrown in jail.

There is a difference however. Homosexuality, contrary to what Michelle Bachmann and her reeducation camp-running husband believe, is not a choice. At some point, the fundies chose to be assholes and force their views on everyone else, knowing, hoping it would silence kids of a homosexual persuasion and aware it could lead to harassment. They justified it by saying "Well, you're being harassed because you're gay. Stop being gay now." Religion and ignorance are not valid excuses, especially not when kids start killing themselves.
