From about 1983 to 1990 I would turn on the radio and flipping through the stations all I would hear but "I worship Satan and get drunk and hang out with 'girls girls girls' (one of whom might be a teacher I'm hot for)" and have sex kind of music. However in the intervening years I've noticed a steady decline in the amount of metal being played. Is metal music finally dead? Is the amount played adjusted to the region the station is in? Any opinions?
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

I would like to think so. But I sincerely doubt it. However, in ten years what is called rap will more or less be pop. That's how it works.

I'm not on the whole 'modern music sucks' bandwagon, but that song is utter garbage.

90's rap was the best rap. Nowadays it's jsut about some hedonistic douche yelling about how many girls he gets, how big his rims are, and how much better he is than you. I dont see how people can let that pound into thier ears.

Only if you don't actually pay attention to modern rap - especially over the last few years.

That's a joke song.

This is one of their serious songs.

Plus, there are bad songs in all sorts of musical styles. Even if that song was entirely serious, it wouldn't prove anything.

About the OP, If you gauge whether a genre is dead by whether it's popular on the radio, than free jazz, for instance, never existed in the first place. It's also gratuitously uninformed to define rap as a genre as being about sex, drugs, and alcohol.

No, I wouldn't call it dead. Though i depsise rappers like 50 cent and so on, a lot of rap is absolutely amazing. I personally love Eminem, not because of the genre itself but because of the lyrics and language. Rap is, in essence, modern poetry. Sit down and read the lyrics someday, it's much more entertaing to read than Keats, i'll tell you that.

That song is awful..

But no. Rap isn't dead. Nor is Hip-Hop.

"Sister sits on the steps
Cigarette rests on fingertips
Takes a sip of slow death deathly through her lips,
She blows a kiss
Which I can only resist in vain
She got the gift of gravity pulling to ask her name
She says Sagaba
What's it mean - she says in Ilocano
it translates into suffering
I'm pondering the irony to conjure up the fearlessness to find a conversation
She offers me a square, I decline the invitation
It reminds me of the days when I would chain smoke
Broken with no hope
Like broken like the manner she spoke
We both
Two people seeking
Solace and remembrance
And wondering if miracles were meant for us
But intent was just an innocent thought between a sister and a brother
Who been building in the guidance of a mother
And the storyteller stops
Waiting for the beat to drop
Gathering his thoughts in the wind, breathing in like...

Now
I couldn't stand to see the queen breathe her dreams away
And tell me her tomorrow will never become today
I say I used to know a woman just like you,
Beautiful but jaded by the multitude of men who'd often try to
Justify their lies with twisted notions of survival
And hide behind their armor when karma completes a cycle
She replied
That just because I knew a woman well it doesn't mean I know them all
She begins to bade farewell
Eyes up to the sky, she sighs, I need nobody
True indeed, sister, but you still need everybody because
We hardly know ourselves if we know nobody else
And only in our loneliness can home become a hell
Exhale
The cloud in the loudest form of silence
Watches as it rises like suns over horizons
The storyteller stops
Waiting for the beat to drop
Gathering his thoughts in the cloud, breathing out like...

Dreams be the ashes
Burns and thrashing in the wind
Flying out the burning bush attached to sister's hand
Who whispers word
Smiling and giving thanks, living in doubt no longer
As she figures out the riddle to the song
Saying why must we suffer now and not suffer later if later
Never comes soon enough to soothe the hatred
And hatred
Is the cancer born _ of love's absence
And the absence is the void left from missing every chance to
Challenge our fates and perhaps our very names
Sister says peace and prayers for rain and change
Tosses out her lighter
Walks out of the cipher
For shizzle it starts to drizzle and then I begin to write this
Inhale the imagery a queen walking steadily
Effortlessly
Ready to be
Every woman and now the
Story teller ends
Waiting for the beat to fade
Gathering his thought near the edge of the day like..."

I say the mainstream part of it isn't exactly doing well with quality music. With the exception of a few rappers, mainstream hip hop is complete garbage. However to say the genre as a whole being dead... I'm not sure about that. There are tons of non mainstream acts that put out great music. Tech N9ne, Jay Rock, Crooked I and Royce da 5'9" are just the few of many non-mainstream rappers who put out good music. If you want quality, you just have to find it because it definitely is not in the mainstream.

I'm glad its not, some of its good, some of it, however, is utter crap.

I understand, you may despise/dislike of it because you just don't like rap, or have only been exposed to the poor side of the Rap Culture, but like almost every form of Music, that genre will never really die. It may change [Such as Rock an Pop has], but its basis will never go away because there will always be people listening to it, some will be inspired and produce more, inspiring more, producing more, et cetera, et cetera.
