And I'm still expecting a comprehensive argument from you on why exactly Argentina has a claim on the Falklands.

On a side note, anyone else been thinking of writing to Kerchner and pointing out that the only claim Argentina has is loosely, and I mean really loosely, descended from the Spanish Empire and thus it's her who's been the Imperialist? I'd like to see if anyone's asked her that rather than her dimwitted Foreign Minister.

True, but has anyone in the Argentinian media actually asked her why your country (Or at least, the more nationalistic segment) feels it can have the Falklands?

One of the biggest problems is that it would be ridiculously difficult to find any non-partisan nations out there in order to adjudicate. We (the UK) have built ourselves up on quite a few shit-lists and many nations would probably just rule in Argentina's favour just to piss us off.

I'd like to see the UN sit down and objectively look at all the matters surrounding who owns the Falklands and taking into account the Falklanders' wishes. But it is such a politically charged issue that this is never, ever going to happen with an outcome which is truly fair.

Doubt it will be a majority. And even by some miracle, Argentina somehow managed to convince world that Falklands should be Argentine: UK can simple pull out joker card and veto it.

That point was raised in the BBC article reporting it. Since Argentina knows it won't have any resolution critical to Britain pass, it's considered by some to be an attempt to gain public support and internationalise the attempt of Argentina to circumvent the wishes of the Falklanders.

Oops. Did I say that? I'm sorry, I realise now that all Big Brother Argentina wants is its rightful Malvinas back.

See, that's the thing. Public opinion here believe the Falklands/Malvinas (I will call them "those islands" so as not to be a part of that ideological battle) are ours from a given. They never actually dabbled in the whole story.

You do know the UK. govt. is talking out of both sides of the mouth.

For those not sure of the saying "Talking out of both sides of the mouth" read this

This idiom or expression has to do with:

Saying something to someone, but something different to someone else.

How can I trust you when you talk out of both sides of your mouth?

So how is the UK. govt. "Talking out of both sides of the mouth".

They say the wishes people of the Falkland islanders must be respected. But when it comes to the wishes of the Chago Islanders, those do not have to be respected. Which in the end means any UK. argument against Argentina is meaningless until they put right this Chago island fiasco. It is to the advantage of the Falkland islanders that the UK. finally put right this Chago island fiasco. Afterall, if they did it to the Chago Islanders what is there stopping them from doing the same thing to them in the future. Of course since everyone these days has cellular phone cameras and internet cameras, the UK. govt. would probably evict the Falkland islanders in a much nicer way then they did the Chago Islanders.

After reading the Wikipedia article, it looks like the Chagos case is a lot more complicated, and very different. I personally believe that Britain is in the wrong with regards to Chagos, but that does not mean they cannot protect the rights of their own citizens elsewhere.

It is not difficult. Just let the Chago Islanders go home. The US airbase just uses one island while the other 54 islands go uninhabited. The people were not against the airbase. They were happy since it would provide employment. At the very least if you do not want them on those islands then give each family one million pounds each. But they forced them out and were too cheap to give them any money.

Edit - You should watch this.

You guys are all really making me want to visit the Falklands. Have you seen their tourism website? Penguins AND delightful looking foods. Plus they have awesome stamps. And a delightful cathedral. Fun!

I know where I'll be in a few months... Assuming it'll still be there. :)

Nice vocabulary for a public forum. And then they wonder why kids use so much foul rude language these days.

@Eulandia - They were giving a show on the coast of the South American continent. They showed the Falkland islands and penguins. They say when the oceans were lower in elevation that you could walk the 643 Km. from the Falkland islands to Patagonia in Argentina.

as far as i understand it the changos are not classified as indigenous people. interestingly if they went to the UN and managed to get support to be returned there and the right to choose whether they remain british or not, would be in the UKs best interest.
One of agentinas arguments about hte falklands right to self determination is the fact they are not an indigenous cultre. that would not longer be an argument if the changos went back.
also regarding the chagos, there is also the issue of the US military base and its 50 year lease.

I see your point:
You Britons wronged the Chago Islanders in the past so you HAVE TO wrong the Falklanders too!

By the way, I'm sure that this argument makes the Argentinian claim about having the right to stomp over the Falklanders' will ANOTHER TIME totally valid... only it doesn't.
What about giving Argentina the right to wrong the Chago Islanders too, instead? That's fair, ain't it?
