Best British Prime minister

Postby Russenich » Thu Sep 10, 2009 10:49 am

I was wondering, with so many American President threads around, that I would be Original and to a British PM one. Please tell me if it has been done before.

I don't recall a thread like this before.

My choice would be Churchill. Hard to think any other could eclipse him.

I also have soft spots for Wilson and Llyod George even though in some ways they made a mess of things.

Adolf Hitler. Best absentee PM Britain never had.

What did he do?
He encouraged rapid technological development of the British Warmachine, Scientific breakthroughs, and crushed the air out of the pro-inequality Aristocracy.
He demolished the old city of London by force and caused new development.
He unified the British people in a way that was otherwise unacceptable to their own ruling class ten years previous.

Never! Gladstone!

I'm disappointed - but not entirely surprised - that Disraeli is getting more votes than Gladstone; cynicism still wins over substance, it seems.

"Best" is such a nebulous term. Best at what?

I went for Walpole because he was the first Prime Minister of Great Britain and he looked pretty good in that wig.

This did remind me of Al Stewart's lyric ...

And one day Macmillan was coming downstairs
A voice in the dark caught him unawares
It was Christine Keeler blowing him a kiss
He said "I never believed it could happen like this
But oh, every time I look at you
I feel so low I don't know what to do
Well every day just seems to bring bad news
Leaves me here with the post World War Two Blues"
Make Earth Great Again: Stop Continental Drift!
And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water ...
"Make yourself at home, Frank. Hit somebody." RIP Don Rickles

RIP Dyakovo ... Ashmoria (Freedom ... or cake)
This is the eighth line. If your signature is longer, it's too long.

Where is the option for Gordon Brown. :(
Where I ask!
WHERE?
Seriously where is it.
He is totally cool. :)

I voted Churchill, who is certainly one of the most memorable and most inspirational of our PMs. However I do have a strong soft spot for Clement Attlee, who effectively set up the welfare state and founded the NHS. Surprised he wasn't in the poll, I'm disappointed!

I owe a lot to both Churchill for driving Britain so well against Nazi Germany. Without him I would not be able to describe the horror if Nazi occupied the whole of Europe.

Regardless of Churchill's legacy as Prime Minister, he certainly must be remembered as one of the worst First Lords of the Admiralty of all time.

Come to think of it, we really should mention Spencer Perceval - he was undeniably our most successful Prime Minister in terms of getting yourself assassinated in office. No one else has managed that particular distinction with anything resembling the same success, either before or after.

No Atlee? No Asquith? No, you put fucking Blair on there :palm:

Mine is Maggie as a person. Atlee as a politician.

edit - I bet most of the votes for Churchill were from foreigners.

Not in my case; I suspect votes for the milk snatcher will be, or from people too young to remember her being in power.

Was surprised that Atlee didn't make the cut, not so shocked by Asquith. I'm a big fan of how Asquith neutered the House of Lords, but I'd imagine he's remembered chiefly for his bungled wartime legacy. I was more shocked that the younger Pitt didn't make the cut.

Also, I'm a foreigner -- still allowed to have an opinion, right? :) I didn't vote for Churchill. Between his record at the Admiralty and in his post-war premiership, I think he's grossly overrated.

I don't agree with many of her policies (I agree with the Falklands). I just think she was a strong leader.

Disraeli, followed by Thatcher and Attlee. Disraeli saw Britain reaffirmed as the world's greatest power while instituting the first social reforms. Thatcher brought Britain out of 'Suez Syndrome' and saw us move back into the top three powers in the world with the Falklands, while also saving our economy from bankruptcy. Attlee reconstructed Britain greatly after the war, but it was his government that left India and Palestine and are at least partially responsible for the crises there now.
