Spiders are our friends!

Postby Niur » Tue Jan 17, 2012 4:37 pm

http://bogleech.com/arachnophobia.html
I used to live in a bubble, a bubble where in I believed that only my crazy sister was afraid of spiders. I have found that to be wrong now. Spiders are wonderful fascinating, and most of the time harmless creatures that deserve our admiration, affection or at the very least respect. Yet so many people seem to hate them with such a vengence.I can understand some degree of fear for those capable of inflicting harm, extremely uncommon though they may be, but hatred is completely uncalled for. I ask you spider haters of NS, why do you so dislike these creatures? What reasons could there possibly be to hate something as adorable as this?

I clicked on this, fearing that there's be a spider in the OP.

I'm glad there isn't.

Quite simply, spiders are abominations. I can't even look at a picture of one without freaking out.

I don't necessarily hate them, but I do dislike them. The main reason is there is always a risk a spider has the ability to kill me... so I tend to kill every single one I see... just in case.

I agree, the Soviet Union epitomized capitalism.

I mean, USSR? What's more capitalist than that? Four capitals, all in a row!

I like some spiders, including the little jumping spider you've got there. Once they get bigger than, eh, three centimeters, my rage starts to build. I really hate the spindly legs; I don't care that they're harmless.

They don't have much for central nervous systems, so we can assume they're not very sentient. That's not to say that I don't feel bad for killing them, but the worst thing ever is when, on multiple occasions, there has been a very large spider or insect in the room I am residing in, I shit bricks, and everyone is just mildly amused and no one will even get up to remove the bug so that I can sit in peace. I've caught mice for my mother and chased snakes for my father. Why the fuck won't someone do a far easier thing for my silly phobia? Damn hypocrites.

A dog has the ability to kill you, and is much more likely too, despite the fact that on average, there are a lot more spiders in any one place than a dog. Do you kill dogs on sight?

I know any intelligent creator must have a sick sense of humour because daddy longlegs can be up to half a foot from toe to toe and are gregarious.

Freaks of nature they are.

The way they scheme to catch their prey unaware (and then drink its blood over time) scares people, as expected.

(soon we may have some NS guys i know here trying to convince us they indeed ARE our friends-that 'd be fun)

Certain types of spiders, particurly more derived types, such as huntsmen and jumping spiders, are probably more intelligent than some mammals. Portia spiders have more hunting strategies than any type of animal aside from corvids, humans and apes.

Abomination is an English word describing anything vile and detestable by the person using it.
What does this have to do with something as adorable as a jumping spider?

'Jumping' and 'spider' should not be in the same sentence together.

I don't know about abominations, CM. They're beneficial in that they eat noxious insects, but I have to admit, they are not very appealing visually. I mean, eight legs? Five eyes?

I'm currently regretting entering this thread. My feet are currently up on my chair because I don't trust the floor at this point.

I can't even stay in the same room as a spider. I won't pick one up, whether on a surface or directly. I won't touch one living or dead, and I panic whenever I see one. I can't stand them.

I like spiders just fine so long as they know their place, which is outside. Little ones are allowed in, but anything substantially bigger than a US quarter coin may have an exchange of opinion with the Shoe of Evolutionary Progress.
