I have never downloaded a film on my computer. I would not even know how to do it! I haven't gone to the cinema in years to see a film.

The file does NOT need to be on the server. A picture of a copyrighted material can be considered as piracy, according to SOPA (if I were to believe the provisions of the bill).

Anything that has copyrighted material can be shut down.

See, now this forum can be shut down by SOPA.

Could be, if it passed. Of course, the Mods will get you first. ;)

We arent against the reasoning, but the language

The bill itself is written in a way that legitimate sites that have been trying to stop piracy get shut down. Its written in a way that corporations can shut down smaller competitors by manipulating them. Its written in a way that a more corrupt government than the one we have now could construe any quote as a copyright infringement...and it doesnt fix the problem

Obama might veto SOPA, maybe, possibly. I mean, it might not even make it to his desk in the first place, given that Congressional support seems to be withering away. What I'm saying is, take the headline with a grain of salt:

In-character name of the nation is "Adiron," because I like the name better.

Because the end does not justify the means.

Because "good intentions" does not mean "good outcomes."

Because even though we could probably put a pretty big dent in drunk driving by requiring everyone to call a cop to come over and administer a breathalyzer every time we wanted to drive someplace, that doesn't mean we should do it.

I don't think that sharing a name with a genus of extinct ammonites constitutes piracy. They would have precedence, of course, being older than even me.

The thing is, SOPA won't do that. Piracy will still happen, but now the Internet will basically be subject to corporate censorship through overly-broad "copyright infringement" definitions. So now, you'll have normal people being treated like criminals while the actual "pirates" (YARRRRR) will continue to get away with it.

I am still confused, why is the law meant to t argot illegal "file transfer" but ends up being entirely about censorship?

Because the particular means by which it purports to combat illegal filesharing essentially gives copyright owners a blank check to shut down, on their own initiative, any site they don't like simply by claiming (whether such claim is true or not) that the site contains copyright infringement, without giving the site owners any reasonable guarantee of practical access to due process to contest these claims (unless they happen to be very, very wealthy) or without regard to whether the site itself or merely one of its (possibly anonymous) users is actually responsible for the submission of copyrighted content (and without regard to whether the site owners themselves make good-faith efforts to remove copyrighted content when informed of its presence).

That's irrelevant. According to the site rules, and probably according to the laws of the country the NS servers are located in, supporting pirate activity isn't allowed.

It's also pretty dickish to support piracy; when people work to produce a product, they deserve a reward. Piracy might be inevitable but that doesn't mean it's awesome.
