Bacon, Cancer, and You

Postby Christmahanikwanzikah » Sun Jan 15, 2012 4:03 am

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16526695

A link between eating processed meat, such as bacon or sausages, and pancreatic cancer has been suggested by researchers in Sweden.

They said eating an extra 50g of processed meat, approximately one sausage, every day would increase a person's risk by 19%.

...

Eating red and processed meat has already been linked to bowel cancer. As a result the UK government recommended in 2011 that people eat no more than 70g a day.

Prof Susanna Larsson, who conducted the study at the Karolinska Institute, told the BBC that links to other cancers were "quite controversial".

She added: "It is known that eating meat increases the risk of colorectal cancer, it's not so much known about other cancers."

The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, analysed data from 11 trials and 6,643 patients with pancreatic cancer.

It found that eating processed meat increased the risk of pancreatic cancer. The risk increased by 19% for every 50g someone added to their daily diet. Having an extra 100g would increase the risk by 38%.

...

Dr Rachel Thompson, the fund's deputy head of science, said: "We will be re-examining the factors behind pancreatic cancer later this year as part of our Continuous Update Project, which should tell us more about the relationship between cancer of the pancreas and processed meat.

"There is strong evidence that being overweight or obese increases the risk of pancreatic cancer and this study may be an early indication of another factor behind the disease.

"Regardless of this latest research, we have already established a strong link between eating red and processed meat and your chances of developing bowel cancer, which is why WCRF recommends limiting intake of red meat to 500g cooked weight a week and avoid processed meat altogether."

So... yeah. That most holy of meats - bacon - along with other processed meats and red meat may actually cause you to die from cancer faster than you would from, say, obesity. Or old age. Or a vicious PETA nagging.

What will ye of Bacondom do, NSG? Will you be like me, and continue to revel in your carcinogenic, bacon-loving ways? Or will you flee from bacon like you would previously have fled from non-pork bacon?

I heard that ham (being also made from Pork) has the same effect. If it's consumed less than, say, 4 times a week, you should be fine.

Fearmonger reports that say "increases your chance of ______________ by ____%" always seem to leave out the important bit...

What is the base probability...

"The chance of being killed by a drop-bear while walking under a gum tree is 1 in 200,000,000 if you wear a proper hard hat, but taking off the hard hat increases your chance of being killed by 100%!"

I will continue to self administer medicinal bacon as and when needed.

Frankly, I believe bacon should be banned in public places to avoid second-hand inhalation of baconcinogens.

If you see bacon in public, it is your duty to consume it immediately for the safety of nearby innocents.

For lunch today I plan on consuming bacon, on top of red meat, with cheese. Fuck you scaremongering science types.

And eating grains can give you cancer.
And some fruits
And burnt food
And fried food
And cleaning products
And particles in the air.
Something like 35% of people will get cancer and nobody knows exactly why. Research can find factros which seem to correlate with a higher incidence of cancer, but life is an experiment on one.

13.6 per 100,000 men and 10.7 per 100,000 women will get pancreatic cancer in their lifetime.

Eating the indicated amount of extra meat would still leave me with a lower chance of getting it than the average male. I think I'll keep my fatty bacon and delicious venison sausage (cooked in beer, of course, because that is the best way to cook sausage).

I was about to say something similar. If we concerned ourselves with every possible thing that might cause cancer in our lives we'd live an empty shell of an existence; or off ourselves.

Some day they will give up and say "You know what! Everything may potentially cause cancer! Then billions of dollars of research money will then be spent on finding things that don't cause cancer. I think I would prefer it that way because I'd much rather read a news article that says "French fries not related to cancer" than "Bacon related to cancer."

Bacon for Feramanus

Postby Feramanus » Sun Jan 15, 2012 4:44 am

I say this is the silliest thing that has yet to be put before me. Apart from the fact that the actual article itself seems to flip-flop on the issue, claiming in one paragraph that cancer chances will be increased, but then saying in the very next paragraph that chances are minimal as is the risk, it seems to me that the researchers themselves don't quite understand what the data they've presented to us means. They even bring into question the notion of weather or not eating meat itself is what's actually causing the problems, or if it's obesity in general in the fourth paragraph of the article. The entire notion of "cancer scares" is rather laughable to me, seeing as every other day, something new comes out that people say will riddle your body with ingrown cells. If all these surveys and tests are supposed to be true, then why is the entire world population not one big, festering, cancerous tumor? No, bacon will continue to be consumed by me and all my people. Bacon is good and it deserves to be eaten!
