But in a loss by only 7 (and it being close throughout)? I mean, the Panthers were up 21-14 going in to the fourth quarter and Newton still had almost 40 pass attempts?

Oh, I get that this wasn't an example of that. I was just addressing the general assumption that seemed to underlie your post.

Oh, no, I was more amazed that a rookie I had expected to be sub-par for a few years could throw for 400 against the Cardinals and lose. I mean, the Cardinals have no defense, but to only put up 21 points off 400 yards is a disgrace.

Just because it's interesting, from 2001 through 2010, there have been 67 games in which someone passed for at least 400 yards (counting games in which multiple passers had more than 400 yards passing twice). In 35 of those games, a team with a 400-yard passer lost.

That sounds about right. I learned something interesting, too: the longest pass in Panthers history was thrown by - wait for it - Kerry Collins back in 1995.

How much of that was in the air, though, and how much was YAC?

That I don't know. I've closed the tab, but I believe it was 89 yards, so I'd imagine a great majority of it was after the catch. I'm guessing a screen taken to the house.

 Wow. Nice statistic. I wonder why the 400-yarders lose so much?

Not to mention that teams with more than a one-score lead will go into prevent defences, so they'll give up lots of easy yardage in say 15 yard chunks because they know you can't do that fast enough to win the game without a big play for a quick score.

What's impressive is he beat Peyton's record by 120 yards. And coincidental that it happened when Peyton's starting streak ended.

I won my money league game by 42. DOMINATION.

And Fred Davis got picked up at 6:59 PM last night. Not by me though. I think as Cooley gets healthier, Davis' numbers are going to cool off.

Yes, it was. He beat Peyton's record for most passing yards in first game of career, and tied Matthew Stafford's record for passing yards by a rookie.

500+ passing yards in his first game of the season?

This is ridiculous.

But then again remember the Pats went 15-1 and still lost the Super Bowl.

On the flipside Chad Henne moved the ball a lot against the Pats defence, now maybe he's taken a big jump in the offseason but...

Oh they went 16-0? I thought they went 15-1. Either way. 16-0 means shit if you can't win in the playoffs.

Yeah in 2007 they went 16-0 and lost the Super Bowl. And last year they went 14-2 and lost the... didn't even make it to the Super Bowl.

Well, it's the AFC East... they play Buffalo, Miami, and the Jets twice each. That's good enough for a 5-1 at the least. All they have to do is play .500 football for the rest of the season and they're in the playoffs.

Very true.. And just think back when the Bills, Dolphins and Jets were better teams the pats were the basement team.

I prefer the late 80's and early 90's myself... with the Pats and Jets never making it far, while the Bills owned. Too bad I was just a toddler then...
