Can I just say that one reason I find it acceptable that today people say the 'N' word is mainly because I believe societies have moved on from swearing being almost a taboo. I find evidence here in the UK to be that they recently relaxed laws when swearing at a police officer as no longer a public order offence. I've heard kids here nowadays swearing at the age of around 6 whereas when I was younger I started swearing at around 12, 4 years ago. It has almost become a sort of mainstream, normal thing within society and I admit I use the word but not to offend anyone and nor do I say it at anyone who is black. I am distinctly anti-racist which is channelled into my nation here on NationStates and would certainly defend anyone who has had a racial attack against them.

The free speech aspect of the issue is completely beside the point. The police cannot arrest you just for saying the word "nigger" in the US without violating the constitution. However, what I think the point here is (or should be) is social acceptability, and I actually do think there should be social rules (violation of which consists of ostracism and other nonviolent social punishments that don't involve the legal system) that place some controls on what we can and can't say. It should never be anything political, just things that involve rudeness and really bad taste.
I think we should hold everyone to the same standard. If white people can't openly call a black person a nigger, then black people should not be able to call white people honkie or cracker. Of course, these kinds of things are never applied when the minority is doing it, even against another minority. Louis Farrakhan can call Hitler a great man and say the most vile things about Jews and Asians, then there is that Imam in London (from what I know, Britain has hate speech laws, meaning actual legal consequences for people who make bad statements about certain groups) who can call for the stoning of gays, yet both of them are free men who the media takes seriously, no legal or social consequences.
