It annoys me that a lot of atheists I know have a far greater knowledge of religion and the bible than any christian ive met, you would have thought the theists be familiar with their own "Good Book"s

I can understand why you wouldn't believe in God, but, come on, isn't looking at life that way a little boring? I mean the whole "nothing happens when you die, its like sleeping" seems pretty depressing to me.

Lordieth wrote:I'm an Apathetic Agnostic, which is pretty much as close as you can get to Atheism without actually being an Atheist. I find Atheism to have too much of a finality to it, which doesn't appeal to the scientist in me at all.

I am unsure whether a higher entity than us exists beyond or observation or understanding, and I think we'll never know either way. If God does exist, our limited understanding of the Universe couldn't do this entity justice in even attempting to describe it.

The more complex we understand the Universe to be, the less likely it seems we are of any focal importance. I accept that some things are beyond knowing, and the possibility of a god-like being is one of them.

If you "don't know and don't care if a god exists" then you "lack belief in a deity or deities" and thus are an atheist whether you want to admit to it or not.

I worry more about having a life now than having a boring afterlife, thank you very much. A life without the worry of a judgement following my death. To continue, I hold that the lack of an afterlife means every second of life on earth is very valuable, and thus, every moment of life is special. I don't quite see how this is depressing to you, but to each their own.

Also, since I hold it to be the truth that no afterlife exists, why would I lie to myself simply because its less depressing or boring?

Eh, unless I got to choose how I reincarnated, I don't think I'd much like the idea. Floating, metaphorically, in deep dark nothingness seems preferable.

What could be more interesting that the vibrancy and brilliance of evolution, its so interesting! It annoys me that a second rate explanation like creationism is so boring as well as being wrong! I feel proud that I will live on in part through my children and in the plants and bacteria that my corpse will feed, its amazing to know that one day I shall be viewed by future humans in the same way we view homo erectus and austrolapithecus, atheism is amazingly interesting! Once you accept that you dont have all the answers you go out looking for them and find out how interesting the real explanations are

Its depressing to me that people dont acheive their full potential and dont follow their hearts because they are waiting to do that in a non-existant afterlife

Quite frankly aliens would be the top of my list. I'm really expecting they're out there (I mean the possibility that they aren't is EXTREMELY small) so that humanity can realize that they are NOT special, that they are NOT the best, and that they are insects that have no right to claiming to be "special creatures created by God".

I quite like the analogy that sort of explains why religion isnt necessary anymore and actually hinders us, if you are walking down a road in the night, it is best to be led by a blind man, as he knows the roads and paths in darkness far better than you, but when the sun enters the sky it is stupid to be led by a blind man, as you can now walk far better by yourself.

Actually, that varies from person to person. The lack of an afterlife is depressing to me, even though I'm an atheist.

It's not about belief, it's instinctual.
At the beginning there was nothing except for Me and the Word. And then I used the Word to make everything. It was a fragile, entropic, continuously changing world that encompassed both light and darkness, sadness and joy, agony and ecstasy, sin and rescue. I looked down at that barely holding piece of mud, and it was good. I looked up at the entire universe, an unstable sandstorm of stars that would fade just as inevitably as the souls of man, and it was good. There was only one thing out of place, one thing that did not belong: Myself.

Boring and depressing? We can enjoy the same myths and stories, we just realize they're fiction. And what about the beauty of reality itself? That's got to be worth something. Religion on the other hand says "don't look there, we've got stories" and when someone does look and sees that the story is wrong, they'll either be silenced, or the story is changed and everyone acts as if nothing ever happened.

Sorry, but the society would need to move past religion in order to have technological advancement of millions of years ahead of us.
