Ugh.

Mine personally is that they undercut the ability of the congress to check the appointments of the president. In this case, while the congress was being a gaggle of idiots, it still should be able to use its powers to manipulate policy.

Well, then they should have held a hearing on the appointments and voted it down, rather than blocking the vote in the first place. The department that needs the head was already established by policy. I really don't have an issue with this.

so has anybody ever even attempted to provide a justification for filibusters of executive branch positions? like, the filibuster is pretty indefensible in any case, but why should the minimal functioning of the executive branch be subject to minoritarian rule from the senate?

The minority in the senate is obviously the will of the people, and that should overrule this "executive branch" dictatorship of the left you seem so ready to admire!

i honestly have an issue with the senate having a role in the process of appointments at all, outside of judges, ambassadors, and maybe cabinet secretaries. if the legislative branch wants say over the functioning of various departments, they should pass laws like normal people.

Article II, Section 2, paragraph 2: "[The President] shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law: but the Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments."

You have senatorial issues, as I recall. :p But I suppose that paragraph could be amended.

For Republicans, "working with us" means "capitulating to us".

Today's Republicans don't know how to compromise. Offer them 99% of what they want, and they'll shout in your face: "Where the fuck is the other 1%?!?"

This was a very good move in the face of an effort to subvert the law that established the CFPB by taking advantage of a loophole that prevented the new agency from doing any real work until it had a director. Now it does, and the law can finally be applied.

Not sure if you're trying to be serious there, BC...

I would attribute it to a world-view in which Republicans are absolutely certain that they are right, absolutely certain that Democrats are wrong, absolutely convinced that those who disagree with them are evil monsters who seek America's destruction, and thus utterly convinced that anything they do - even if it involves log-jamming the system, throwing a spanner in the national works, sabotaging the national economy, or even violating the law outright - is absolutely justified by virtue of the fact that they're trying to save America while those who disagree with them are trying to destroy it.

Listen to Bachmann's rhetoric: "We only have this election cycle to save America"... "I've never compromised with our rivals"... It's typical of Republican rhetoric, and it shows how far overboard the GOP has gone. They have fully embraced Barry Goldwater's dictum: "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

Of course, it's no use pointing out that what they advocate constitutes neither liberty nor justice; they're convinced that it is, and won't listen to anyone who says otherwise, so that's that.

This is why I'm half convinced that if they don't win the next election, they'll try to stage an armed revolt to seize power. They've certainly worked themselves up to the necessary level of fanatical hysteria for it.

Seriously, do we need more paid government positions that allocate more taxpayer dollars? I really doubt it.

How about getting rid of some useless government postions? The Department of Energy, perhaps? The Department of Agriculture, too, perhaps?

For those playing the home game, the Department of Energy is in charge of the US nuclear stockpile.

I am rather puzzled how so many can praise him for acting like a dictator, but at the same time i can not make a good comment because i have not heard about this and i don't trust goverment media, goverment media in this case refers to the outlets that still think thay are mainstream but are in fact the dieing media like cnn, fox, abc, msnbc and others.

"Acting like a dictator" for following the procedure that's been in place for literally centuries to make a temporary appointment that by law will end in a few weeks, so that some necessary work can get done over that time span?
