What is your family crest?

Postby Gridea » Thu Dec 29, 2011 12:39 am

I'm fully aware that not EVERY single family in the world has a crest, but I'd assume there's many of us out there who are descendants of families with such things. You do not necessarily need to put out the family's name (for anonymity's sake), but an image of your crest is good.

For example, this is my family crest.

Image

Be advised, I've made this to where the lion is abnormally huge.
This is the Warren family crest, our motto is "The Lion of Judah Is Our Strength".

That's pretty sweet. Nice and simple coloring for a crest. I saw the image like that with my crest, I just like having it as a straight up shield; just looks cooler like that to me.

Surprisingly enough, the name changing thing was quite common. Apparently early English didn't exactly have spelling set in stone, so everyone had a different way of it. My name has so many variations it ain't even funny...

Just an FYI, there's no such thing as a FAMILY CREST. Heraldry was made and modified for an individual, and while it may have been passed down in line, each generation tended to get a new crest representing their own deeds and merits.

What you find online is a bunch of bullshit made up to con you out of money by "Historians".

I could care less if there was or not, I just find this interesting. All I wanted was to see if anyone else did; if you did not find it interesting or did not care for it, then please find something else to do then bashing this.

Not that people would purchase images.

Most of the con-job is them selling swords, shields, "family histories", and banners that have your "Family Crest" emblazoned on them. It's a nice little conversation device for the misinformed that they charge way too much for. Most of it is mechanically mass-manufactured for a fraction of the cost they sell it to you at.

Also, I'm not bashing this so much as adding an educational light. I said nothing to insult any of you for taking an interest in your personal histories, I just merely wanted to prevent you from being duped by ill-meaning trinket sellers. I'd be pleased as plum to hear some of you actually recieved a legitimate crest.

There are quite a few sites online that explain the imagery on crests, giving you information on what means what. If you took the time to catalogue deeds that you have committed and listed your virtues, you could certainly create a crest, though it's not as though you were granted it by right. Legitimate crests are bestowed for recognition.

Ireland has tartans, you might like to look those up as well.

Are you differentiating between a crest and a coat of arms? They are two different things.

My family crest is a yew tree that was presumably killed by something, but there are green branches growing out of it. The motto under the the crest is "reviresco" - meaning "I grow again" or "I grow green".

My family coat of arms is a quartered shield with a closed left facing helmet on top and two rampant unicorns flanking it. The quarters are filled with, from the top right, a lion passant, a tree or castle tower (it varies depending on the branch of the clan), a red hand circled by a broken chain, and a Viking long boat. The motto under the shield is "Vincere vel mori" - I'm not sure but I think that means "victory or death".

We also have a clan tartan - dark green, dark blue, black with thin red stripes of yellow and red.

Well, I never had any intention of BUYING anything, but my Father's done actual research as to the heraldry and apparently mine's legitimate. There are records of knights in my family. I'm assuming it's because my name is pretty common that it was easily found, I mean I've met so many other people with the name and there is no visible connection between my family and their's other than possible ancestry.
