The katana is made to sound great but it was actually inferior to Western arms due to the very, very poor quality of the iron in Japan, which is why the spent so much time folding it. In addition, the Samurai never had as much military tradition -- while they did participate in feuds between daimyos, they were more or less riot police and never got to the level of prowess the Chivalric knights, who participated in large scale war, had. Not to mention their armor was made of wood, so their fighting style was more about not getting hit than anything.
