The worst part about this exchange is that I had ancestors that not only were of the slave-owning generation, but were actual plantation-owners.

One of them wrote a letter explaining why she wasn't racist in doing so, actually. It proved she wasn't that, at least.

Though, in thinking about it, how do you know your ancestors didn't own slaves in their areas before coming over?

Unlike everyone and their brother who lays claim to nobility in their family line, we've always been poor but honest country folk. So... most likely someone else's slave!

I'm mostly Irish, and my Maternal Great-Great Grandmother came over to the States from Ireland in the Early 1900's or late 1800's, and she was of the MacNamara Clan of County Clare, where she met my Maternal Great-Great Grandfather, somewhere in the South, prolly Kentucky, considering my Great-Grandfather was a Kentucky Coal Miner. My Paternal Great-Great Grandfather Came over to the States from The United Kingdom (Either Scotland or England) in the early 1900's as well, then he fought in WW1.

Italia on my mother's side and Ireland, initially, on my father's side. It was my great-grandmother, my mother's grandmother, who was born in Italy and came here when she was a little girl. Someone from my father's side, probably a relative of his mother,immigrated from Ireland (I think) to Canada where my father's father's family was. Then somehow a Native American tribe got involved, and the whole mass migrated south.

I really don't know exactly, though, but it's something like that.

My mother is Puerto Rican and my father is a Spaniard and met in Spain where I was eventually born. We came to Chicago when I was just a wee little tike but I've often returned to Spain and Europe in general since then.

My Maternal Grandfather is mostly African-American with alittle from numerous native American tribes (Cherokee,Blackfoot, Catawba,and Cheraw). My Maternal Grandmother is primarily of German and French descent with some Jewish mixed in, and according to my Grandmother, her family also had some Polish blood.

My Paternal Grandfather is of African-American, White, and Cherokee descent and my Paternal Granmother is of African American, Native American, and White heritage.

So I'd say I'm roughly 3/4 ~ 2/3 African-American, with the remainder being German, French, Jewish, White American, Polish, Cherokee, Blackfoot, Catawba, and Cheraw.

The Norwegian side came over a two generations ago (is that right? My grandma as a kid. Yeah, that's right...) so some of them still speak Norwegian but will tell you that they don't. Though we really only have a few held over traditions, like some of my family still eat lefse despite it having the flavor of a flour dipped napkin...and we all say 'uff da.' Other than that, no real connection to my roots. I'm closer to Northern California where both my parents were born and I was and until recently had never left.

LOL. I, too, descend from several very long lines of American farmers and coal miners. Who descended from peasant farmers and coal miners from all over northern Europe.*

Isn't "American" an ethnicity yet? In general, I'm Anglo-Saxon and Celtic. Specifically I'm Irish, Welsh, English, Scottish, Norweigan, German, Dutch and Swiss.

As far as I know my family comes from Lower Saxony, which is fairly unsurprising, seeing as they live there. I, having moved to East Germany, was accused of breaking teadition by my grandmother for not chosing to study in Hannover instead.

Lots of Irish blood, as well as some German and Norwegian. The only real ethnic influence on me was Polish, since my grandma was second-generation immigrant. That only influence is basically just Polish food though.

I think my Mum's family are descended from the Huguenots who moved to England from France is the 18th century, my Mums families surname was originally French. My surname came from Ireland. Overall I think I am mostly English, with some French, some Irish and perhaps some German.
