I agree, probably not. But Liverpool & Everton were good too, last year.

Anderlecht did beat Manchester United too a few years ago. And with all respect for Anderlecht, MU is playing in a league away above them.
In football weak teams can beat stronger teams.

I play a lot Football Manager 2009, I'm currently playing with Solihull Moors in the Conference League. :)

True. But I reckon that all the English teams will make it to the Quarters. There's been an English team in the final for like 5 years or something.

How is the English public reacting to the invasion of foreign players?

Meh. Not badly. There's a little complaint of that they're not giving young English players a chance. I don't mind, it makes the Prem better.

Here it is the same. As long as the team is winning, no ones complain. :)

Yes I know. Small countries have no change anymore to win an European cup. A little sad, but that's how it is. Fuck Bosman. :)

We'll let, say, Brian Urlacher, tackle you at full speed, and you don't get pads.

I'm surprised Minnesota managed to beat Syracuse...I didn't have much in the way of expectations for my Gophers this year, but it's always nice to open the season with a win.

As a Vikings fan, I'm hopeful. As long as the coaching staff keeps Favre in line, they'll do well...if they don't, he'll keep on trying to win games with his arm instead of handing the ball off to Peterson like they ought to.

Favre shouldn't throw 25 picks this year because, with luck, they won't be throwing very much. He was only brought in to keep defenses honest, instead of stacking 8 men in the box.

We've got the Browns in week one, so we'll see how things go...should be a win, but you never can tell.

After Barcelona & Real Madrid: yes.

But it's true the English teams reach the semi finals almost every year. I hope the FIFA or UEFA will do something about it, question is: what?

It was my (Australian) wife who really brought it to my attention a few years ago, but surely American football is the single most homoerotic team sport on the face of God's green earth.

All those 'tight ends' and 'wide receivers' going into a manly huddle while wearing skin-tight trousers, before bending over to display their ever-so-taught buttocks to the world, and falling over into one big heap, one on top of the other, man to man to man, holding on to their opponents as tightly as possible.... And never mind the naked post-game showers.

After this revelation, the sight of all of those repressed Texans foaming at the mouth over watching 18 year boys grab each other's tackle - sorry, I mean tackle each other - makes so more sense. Equally, those liberal enlightened New Englanders and Californians must obviously watch the sport because they're more in touch with their inner LGBT.

I haven't quite worked out a similar theory for Canadian football yet, but given that the CFL has a 'Saskatchewan Roughriders', and used to also have an 'Ottawa Rough Riders', it all looks very promising.

Football you say, right then

Premier League

In another year of dramatic underachievement Liverpool finish 5th behind moneybags Manchester City after Mark Hughes buys Messi, Pato, Lampard, Federer and the boat race in the January transfer window. Chelsea finish second after their transfer ban prevents them from bringing in new motors for the teams rascals and Manchester c*nting United stroll in to win a fourth consecutive title and, with his job done, Alex Fergusen is summoned back to Hell.

La Liga

All looks rosy for the Galacticos until Christiano Ronaldo gets stuck in front of a mirror and the smug git can't pull away from his own reflection. Despite the best efforts of Kaka, and the worst efforts of Real's yet again useless defenders, Barcelona win the title by 6 points. Meanwhile at Zaragoza Jermaine Pennant is jailed for 6 months after inviting Joey Barton over for a quiet holiday. The damage inflicted was later valued at £8 million.

Serie A

Suspicions are aroused when Juventus and AC Milan are both awarded three consecutive penalties in three consecutive games, Silvio Belrusconi dismisses allegations of match fixing claiming "I am the Jesus Christ of politics. I am a patient victim, I put up with everyone, I sacrifice myself for everyone." Jose Mourinho sues for infringement of over inflated ego.

Scottish Premier League

Despite possesing the better squad, tactics and manager Celtic suffer from strange flu-like symptoms and Rangers retin the title. The contagion is later identified as Orthomyxoviridae Westbromius.

And in a move later acknowledged as just to piss me off, Mossley yet again fail to achieve promotion.

No, what's that?[/sarcasm]

We weren't talking about brutality or skill, we're talking about the need for pads.

You'll never convince me that a Rugby player hits harder than an NFL middle linebacker. If rugby players hit harder, they would need pads.

Yes, I do. Sad. There's a solution for this kind of terror: life-time ban.

Recently Standard Axel Witsel broke the leg of Anderlecht Wasilewski. The result: Double open leg fracture

Image

The punishment of Witsel: banned for 8 games. Eight!
And he will be able to play Champions League games!

Wasilewski will be out for a year...

Never said Rugby wasn't hard hitting...just that the NFL has players that hit harder. The pads are as much for the hitter as the person being hit, and having pads enables you to...wait for it...hit harder, without as much risk of self injury as a result.

Got any numbers for Rugby fatalities (professional and/or amateur)?

I am curious, and my own search efforts are so far not turning up anything.

Accidents are indeed an exception. Witsel broke the leg of the other not by accident.

Neither can I...I found a few here and there, but I was looking for some comprehensive stats that span at least a couple decades, and so far I'm out of luck.

Over 1000 dead in American Football between 1938 and 2006!

Rugby players deliberately restrain themselves, and for good reason.

If they hit as hard as football players, but without pads, they'd be up Shit Creek without a paddle.
