It seems that the anachronistic House of Lords is now the only opposition to the government's nasty fucking bills. What a strange state. I wish Labour would dissolve.

You've contributed your quota of free labour for the Conservatives' financial backers, then.

Then what?

So they splinter into a range of factional parties, giving the Tories free rein until the end of time?

Another important skill is not letting people know that they are getting to you.. They'll just get at you more..

In regards to social skills I just mean that in the labouring and building trade you'd be surprised by how useful being able to network is for even the lowliest worker.

Damn. 6 posts and the 'lol builder' jokes have started.

Social skills aren't that important, especially as a labourer. I don't think you quite understand what a labourer does. A labourer is everyone on site (or certain trades if your a brickies labourer for example) bitch. You essentially shovel out cement etc, carry the bricks over (not as bad since they done away with hod's more or less).

You don't need social skills. You need to be able to take 'banter' occasionally dish it out, and obey orders.

You also need to be able to put up with the increasing number of retarded safety regulations that have been coming in since about 2000.

At least that's how my dad the bricklayer described it to me.

Also, booze is not a problem. Most builders are too tired to go drinking after work. They are also covered in dust and dirt and have to wear uncomfortable high vis jackets and shiz.

Are you a Brit? If so, any insight into major differences between living there and living in America?

it's colder and the people, so I keep being told, are ruder.

of course i've never really noticed a difference in the alleged levels of rudeness between the two countries.

I'm from the northeast/mid-atlantic region of the US. We don't wave and smile at strangers either

Don't really want to be in dull England for the rest of my life. I plan on studying abroad and getting citizenship somewhere else.

And I dunno, I've not lived in the US.

I'm rather fond of the London attitude personally. The sheer indifference to everyone and everything around them as long as they get through appeals to me.

I personally refuse to be near anyone if I can help it.

It's when it's inflicted on the rest of us and we're supposed to accept that London is the only place in England which gets to me.

That's how foreigners see the UK, because well, London is shit with nice bits whereas the rest of the country is shit.

I was, however, talking about the attitude of Londoners themselves, both to each other, and outsiders.

What's dull about England?

The food, weather and most of the population.

If it wasn't for the availability of recreational drugs, the NHS, and the long history of making excellent electronic music, I'd be off in a shot.

there are only four other places though, the home counties, devon and cornwall, isle of wight and The North.

Londoners act like the same bunch of self-satisfied provincials you can find anywhere else on our sceptered isles. The fact that they're concentrated in a small, largely dirty, area with too much money and too little education just makes the whole place intolerable.
