It's slowly getting better but it's still a tough time to be in that trade. As with a lot of jobs there's far too few of them with far too many applicants. Also, if you find you can manage the work you'll find that the most important skill in that trade is your social skill and your ability to hold liquor.

I did hear about a forklift driver quitting purely because he couldn't take the stick he was getting...

Another important skill is not letting people know that they are getting to you.. They'll just get at you more..

In regards to social skills I just mean that in the labouring and building trade you'd be surprised by how useful being able to network is for even the lowliest worker.

Social skills aren't that important, especially as a labourer. I don't think you quite understand what a labourer does. A labourer is everyone on site (or certain trades if your a brickies labourer for example) bitch. You essentially shovel out cement etc, carry the bricks over (not as bad since they done away with hod's more or less).

You don't need social skills. You need to be able to take 'banter' occasionally dish it out, and obey orders.

You also need to be able to put up with the increasing number of retarded safety regulations that have been coming in since about 2000.

At least that's how my dad the bricklayer described it to me.

Also, booze is not a problem. Most builders are too tired to go drinking after work. They are also covered in dust and dirt and have to wear uncomfortable high vis jackets and shiz.

Londoners act like the same bunch of self-satisfied provincials you can find anywhere else on our sceptered isles. The fact that they're concentrated in a small, largely dirty, area with too much money and too little education just makes the whole place intolerable.
