If it makes you feel better, he became less racist over time and his statements were not more racist then what was the norm during that era. He was a young man when he made most of these statements and segregation was heavily in style.

Yes! Even at war with Nazi Germany there was very little condemnation of what we now identify as most evil about the Nazis (violent eugenics and racism). There are much more heroes out there that failed to get hired on into the history books because they failed the application process of being on the losing side or not garnering enough one sided hatred to be included in the "winners" text books.
