My goodness. You mean, the process by which humanity clawed its way out of an animal state, made peace with each other and proceeded to build the amazing achievements of civilization that we currently enjoy isn't a noteworthy goal? Imagine that: human progress has been mistaken for thousands of years. Somebody alert the UN. It's time to tear everything down and return to rugged individualism with everyone vigorously defending their little patch of territory.

America isn't great isn't because everyone gives back. It's because everyone can pursue their own interests. Something I'd much rather have seen in this speech would be this:
"Only here in America were the common folk of the Old World given a chance to show that they could do on their own, without a master to push and order them about. History contrived an earth-shaking joke when it lifted by the nape of the neck lowly peasants, shopkeepers, laborers, paupers, jailbirds and drunks from the midst of Europe, bumped them on a vast virgin continent and said: Go for it. It is yours!"

If nothing else, it was a weakly worded message about "giving back", not about individualism. When the speech winds up with the question, "So today, I want to ask you, what's your contribution going to be?", you know you aren't listening to someone that values individual achievement or financial success.

Or how 'bout the first part?

You'll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. All that learning can only be used to help society, not for personal gain.
