Paradoxes

Postby United Casio » Fri Nov 04, 2011 3:51 pm

Do you have paradoxes? I certainly do, I go over them in my mind over and over trying to find a loop hole. So NSG, do you have your own paradoxes? If so, post your own.

Paradox #1: Freedom of Speech, if the freedom of speech was correct, you also h have the ability to denounce you right to freedom of speech through the right of freedom of speech

Paradox #2: "Nothing is impossible": If truly nothing is impossible, then wouldn't it be possible for the impossibility to be truly impossible? Think about it, it annoys me. Can you find any loopholes?

None at the moment.

Freedom of Speech gives you the right to speak freely, it doesn't give you the right to revoke your own rights.

There's no paradox there. It's just an incorrect assertion for which you've already produced a counter-example.

there are two men, a man that always lies and one that always tells the truth. one of the men says to the other " i always lie."

.......i seriously tried to figure this out for about 20minutes before i was told i was a paradox.

The man talking to the other is lying. He 'sometimes lies'.

It's a false binary, or something like that.

I don't see anything paradoxical about that. Why wouldn't a right to free speech cover speech that denies that there is/should be a right to free speech?

On a personal level, you can always waive your own rights. And yes, you can use your freedom of speech to try and advocate that the government revoke your freedom of speech. Aside from Bananagrabber using it in his paradox example though, I can't see any justifiable reason to do it. It seems a bit oymoronic and asinine though.

heres a few :

"If this sentence is true, then Santa Claus exists."

"If there is an exception to every rule, then every rule must have at least one exception; the exception to this one being that it has no exception." "There's always an exception to the rule, except to the exception of the rule — which is, in of itself, an accepted exception of the rule.

People can make decisions based not on what they actually want to do, but on what they think that other people want to do, with the result that everybody decides to do something that nobody really wants to do, but only what they thought that everybody else wanted to do.

When one pursues happiness itself, one is miserable; but, when one pursues something else, one achieves happiness.

(1) Everyone is afraid of Dracula.

(2) Dracula is afraid of only me.

Therefore I am Dracula.

Doesn't that argument sound like just a silly joke? Well it isn't; it is valid. Since everyone is afraid of Dracula, then Dracula is afraid of Dracula. So Dracula is afraid of Dracula, but also is afraid of no one but me. Therefore I must be Dracula!

you know you coul've just looked up paradoxes on google lol.

IMHO a pardox indicates that there's something wrong with one's thinking. The paradox of Achilles and the tortoise is of this sort. I think Leibnitz disposed of this one (as well as the Dichotomy) rather decisively by inventing calculus. "Ne craignez point, monsieur, la tortue." ("Have no fear of the tortoise, sir.")

Going back in time to kill your ancestor. I see it in so many movies and story plots. If you went back in time to kill your father/mother before you were borne you never existed. However if you never existed then you will have never around to go back in time to kill them.

Yes, because nothing is impossible, everything is possible, the abstract of the impossible is possible within the confines of a self-limited mind.

There, I provided an addition to both of your paradoxen. Have you any more paradonxi for my mind to bend, twist, and uncover?
