Rommel. Although I am not in support of his horrible ideology, some of his tactics were imaginative and brilliant.

What horrible ideology? He committed suicide at the end of the war after being implicated in a plot to remove Hitler.

Because he has a book titled "Art of War", so everyone believes he created the modern rule set for war. Even though the book itself is short phrases with most not making any logical sense in a modern day battlefield, at all.

BUT HE WROTE A BOOK HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO. HE MUST BE THE BEST!

You do realize because he was in the Wehrmacht doesn't mean he followed Hitler to the letter, right? Most officers just stayed in the military from WW1, and didn't *join* to help Hitler's deranged ideology.

From Wikipedia wrote:The Afrika Korps were never accused of any war crimes, and Rommel himself referred to the fighting in North Africa as Krieg ohne Hass—war without hate. Numerous examples exist of Rommel's chivalry towards Allied POWs, such as his defiance of Hitler's infamous Commando Order following the capture of Lt. Roy Woodridge and Lt. George Lane as part of Operation Fortitude. He also refused to comply with Hitler's order to execute Jewish POWs.

I've read the book. I think most sensible people who've read the book think it's not really that great. The excerpts I've read of Machiavelli's Art of War seem to suggest it is infinitely better.

from machiavelli's the prince or his art of war?

interesting, the excerpts i've read, seem even less relevant than sun tzu, advice on how many wagons each battalion needs and stuff like that. whereas whilst sun-tzu IS overrated, its general enough to still be relevant. i shall look harder at machiavelli.

i'd tend to side with Fisher and Jellicoe over Nelson.

Machiavelli developed the idea of limited warfare, IIRC.

I'd think that Leahy, King, or Nimitz would be better than Nelson, at the very least, considering that the three of them essentially defined modern naval tactics and strategy.

Also, Sun Tzu isn't that great.

Well... Sun Tsu is a fictional character to which assorted simplicistic and frequently suicidal sayings are attributed, while Alexander used the accomplishments of his father to conquer a disunited Empire already in the process of disintegration and led by a hilariously incompetent emperor, managed to piss off his soldiers to the point where they went on strike, and then marched his entire army through a desert where the majority of them perished.

I'll admit, the two go pretty well together.

Okay first of all,Sun Tsu wrote THE book on military warfare, second, did you not read my post, Alexander beat the perssians, beat the **** out of greece, which includes Athens and Sparta and then went on his merry way to conquering all the way to china.

Patton. The man was a hard worker, and brillant leader by example. Tactics perhaps were lacking... but as a man, truely he is to be respected.

"Quitters" Yup, I would have loved to have seen you in that army. Many of those men had been in that army for years. I would want to go back home as well. What good is conquest if you can't enjoy it? And don't get me wrong, I love Alexander the Great, in fact it was a testament to his leadership that he did go back, proving that he was a good judge of his men's morale and how far he could push them. He was planning on coming back, but then disease struck.

That book was written by multiple people. There is no hard evidence that Sun Tzu even existed, and if he did, we know nothing of who he was, what he did, or if the ideas in the book are his.

Also, that book is fairly general and overrated. It's still an interesting read, but not much more.
