Yeah, well, a sexually segregated warrior society, that keeps slaves in terrible conditions, and then routinely arms them for use as light troops, when the warrior society itself had no light troops...

Nobody ever accused the Spartans of being highly intellectual... Just good at fighting...

They dominated the Peloponnesus, which was the heartland of Greece. They didn't adapt to new tactics and their men obviously weren't disciplined enough to achieve victory at Leuctra.

Their superiority over Greece lasted only a few years. I don't think either of us are arguing against that. So yeah.

Rommel

Postby The new Vichy France » Fri Nov 04, 2011 7:54 pm

I think Erwin Rommel is the greatest of all time because all of his tactics are still used by the USA abram crews. Also if Hitler's generals would've been more trust worthy Hitler wouldn't of made the mistakes he did. The Nazi's could've won the war.

That is quite the, well, broad question to say the least. I think the question can at least be narrowed down to these two catagories. The greatest military tactician and the greatest military strategist.

On the tactical level, I can see no better commander in history than the famed Field Marshal Erwin Rommell. His command of armored units in North Africa was incredible. He had great initiative, ingenuity, and tactical skills. He well understood his men, equipment, and combat situation. He spent a huge amount of time on the front line despite his very high rank, and using this, he was able to have excellant battle fiedl awareness and fight out some of the most incredible armored tactics in history.

Now, as many know, Rommell never really shone strategically, his side losing the war and he being sadly forced to committ suicide because of the evil politics of his nation. My choice for the best stratagist of all time is . . . Gaius Julius Caeser. He was a masterful stratagist in his military capmaigns, commanding an incredibly efficient and capable force very effectively. He had drive and determination in his campaigns and was an amazing leader. Not only that, but his capabilities led hime to huge political success, allowing him to become the first emperor of Rome.

No.

He more won support than fought against people though. William the Great fully conquered England, without support from anyone else.

NAPOLEON, i say!

He fought six different coalitions of mostly the same countries, outnumbered, with no friends, but still won.... mostly. His loss at Waterloo was due to rain, which clogged up the wheels of his cannons, which were his trump card throughout his career, and also due to the Prussians who arrived at the end of the battle BEHIND him, making him sandwiched between fresh Prussian troops, and firmly entrenched British forces.

A genius on both tactical and strategic levels.

Rommell killed himself? I though he died due to an infection because during a battle a fighter plane strafed his command vehicle, and he took shrapnel damage to his leg and the doctors didnt clean out the infection well enough.

Well I learned something new but I agree with Rommel as the greatest military commander of all time, had the fuhrer let him carry out his plan for countering the allied invasion of Normandy, the world would be a much different place.

nope, killed himself. possibly the version you got was the nazi party line, since they weren't going to say they forced him to kill himself by threatening his family.
