Does NS hate religion?

Postby Gryflheim » Thu Oct 27, 2011 8:11 pm

I don't quite understand why half the posts on here are alarmingly anti-religious and, honestly, a little racist. It justs seems like people just trying to stir up more trouble on the internet.

Some think it's stupid, others think it's just unnecessary. I'm with the latter. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a militant atheist. I don't think militant atheism accomplishes much and I say that if religion is to persist, then by all means let it persist. And if it is to die, I do not think we will suffer much for it.

I see the benefits of religion in society today and throughout history, as well as the rationale behind people's holding on to it, especially in times of needs. I don't find reason to be hostile towards it, even if I don't practice it myself and personally think it rather unnecessary.

I can't speak for all of NS, though. I think a lot of us are tolerant of those religious folks who make a case for themselves and respectfully disagree with non-believers instead of lashing out and lambasting them.
Part of me grew up here. But part of growing up is leaving parts of ourselves behind.

As a large global collection of people, NS has many opinions and beliefs. It think it's true that many here of an atheist bent.

Racist? In what way?

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Some members of NS take the militant atheist stance, but most seem to be "live and let live" kinds of people concerning religion.

Well, it's hard to like something that continually refers to you by that annoying nickname "Satan" you picked up in first grade somehow.

Or is that just me? The horns and goatee might have something to do with that, actually. Also the whole "uprising against God" thing. OK, never mind. It's just me.

What does religion have to do with race?

And I don't necessarily hate religion, I'm actually a big fan of mythology and am an avid studier of the subject. However, when people insist on telling me that it's "the truth" and how they "know" it's real, I do feel the need to tell them they are incorrect.

I don't necessarily hate religion, just more of a distaste for it. I really don't care what one worships or believes in, as long as they don't start claiming they are better than everyone else because of their religion. That, and so long as they don't try and actively convert me; If I want to convert, I'll do it on my own time.

Nah. I personally don't hate religion at all. I'm an "Ietsist" actually, which means I think there's iets (=Dutch for something) after death. So I have some common ground with the religious.

People aren't trying to stir up trouble, although it might seem that way. It's just that we've got some religiously devout users of NS clashing, but mostly debating, with atheists, about religion and Christianity.

Rascist comments are just because on the internet, most people assume you're the same race as they are.

And as for the main question:

"Does NSG hate religion?"

The answer would be a weak yes. More people here are atheists than religious, so on average it'd be slightly biased towards atheism.
